Re: Racial Attribute modifiers
Ya, that wording is not at all clear. I'm assuming that pp. 33 ff. "Attribute modifiers" are really just attribute "bonuses / penalties," added or subtracted to the attribute itself, as per most incarnations of D&D. A Troll Lord can correct me if I'm wrong about that. EDIT: M...

Re: Spot Checks…What do You do?
EDIT: My concerns vanish with the simple tweak that any attribute mentioned in the PHB is a suggestion only, and that it's always up to the CK what attribute to use and whether to add level. So for spot, I'd use INT, WIS, or CHA as I see fit, and add level only if I think the class is relevant. As ...

Re: Please help me choose an introductory adventure.
Welcome! One that comes to mind is B3: The Palace of the Silver Princess. It's not my favorite module in general, but I do think it makes a good intro module, especially for younger players. It has a bit of a fairy-tale feel to it, and the adventure has a pretty straight-forward story with clear goa...

Re: Spot Checks…What do You do?
I know I am a little late, but what about adding a sentence or two in the spot check saying that each clas will spot things better that have to do with their class and abilities like I read it somewhere before, credit to who gave me the idea, not sure on his/her name lol and this is me being lazy t...

Re: Spot Checks…What do You do?
I use INT, WIS, or CHA depending on the situation. INT tends to be for active looking, deduction, etc., so I'm more likely to use that for spot checks, looking for secret doors, etc. WIS is more passive, intuitive, experience-based perception (e.g., sensing an ambush). I use CHA for interpersonal pe...

Re: Players Handbook Six
Page 46 of the CKG suggests some clarifications for a handful of spells - if you think those are valuable, you might consider including them in the PHB. TROLL: The spells are playable with greater variety in the PH. The CKG gives you more detail. We like to keep as much in the CK/Players hand as pos...

Re: Players Handbook Six
Clarification about the nature of illusion magic, whether it's "in the mind" or not. (Frankly, I wouldn't at all mind if the PHB went the way of the CKG's interpretation - but to that end, I'd actually rather there be no difference between illusionist's version of spells and those of anyon...

Re: Players Handbook Six
Clarifications about head AC, helms, etc. - just that the PHB doesn't include called shots or hit locations, but there are optional rules (e.g., in the CKG) if people are interested. It seems like the new folks ask about that a lot. TROLL: ADDED TO ARMOR CLASS SECTION on page 132 Armor Class adjustm...

On a related note, if you haven't watched The Call of Cthulhu (2005), I highly recommend it. It's done in the style of the very early movies - silent, B&W, etc. - and it very nicely captures the feel of the story. http://dvd.netflix.com/Movie/The-Call-of-Cthulhu/70067488?strkid=2008728913_0_0&am...

Ya, neither the Holmes basic book (the one I had) nor the 1st ed. MM specifically say anything about dogginess, though that MM picture certainly does look a bit canine, esp. in the snout area. While that's true, this... Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rules, Moldvay version, page B37 "These small...

That's a toughie. Maybe "The Colour Out of Space." Creepy as hell, but also a really nice example of Lovecraft's modernist critique of what he would say was the naivete of the Enlightenment, especially its faith in science.

Arduin's looks dog-like in the face, to me. clearly scaled... never really noticed. Ya, the original were both sort of reptilian and dog-like, but the full on mini-dragon men thing was later. BTW, from the 81 D&D Basic rulebook: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4Nf1fUxRi-LUUJkVDhYSDdwOXc/edit?...

I have some mid-level characters going up against appropriate baddies right now, and they aren't having any trouble connecting, whether using magic weapons or not. I don't think you'll find it's much of an issue. The only exception might be creatures that actually require magic weapons to be hit. Yo...
