If I went straight Attribute Bonus, I would bring back the +4 to add some room for customization and take out the bell curve to make it easier to covert.

When we tried our own multi-class rules, our best compromise turned out to be close to the class and half rules in the 4th printing.

So far, that version seems to offer the least abusive rules with the least amount of headache.

What's your definition of a dwarven colony?

If you use the "large dome with a city at the bottom" as compared to dungeon style tunnels then you could adapt DB4 & DB5. Turn a human city under siege into a dwarven city under siege.

I find that until guns fire every round, players aren't interested in using them for more than a first volley.

On the other hand, when guns can fire every round, you can usually kiss hand to hand combat good bye.
