My first DnD game was at a Boy Scout camp. They mentioned flaming swords and flying carpets and I was there.

Better yet, that's the story that gets me excited to run C&C.

Before I forget, another tip that gets pass around for converting on the fly is that you base the to-hit bonus on the HD of the critter and ignore THACO.

I haven't done this yet, so take it with a grain of salt ...

Have your players make 5th to 6th level characters. For those who love options to chose from, this gives them some abililties to try out and it shouldn't take much longer during character creation.
