I played it once (for about 4 months) back in '79 or '80. I didn't run it. I remember it being fast, deadly and fun. The dwarven ability to Tunnel was hilarious.

I didn't say they needed to be hired, but I am sure they would have information.... or might. I know. I was just stating how most view the class. (why no one mentioned the class) Killers for hire. Thus they focus on what they would need to accomplish "jobs". It started in 1st Edition I th...

Re: How To Kill Monsters

Interesting. I didn't see anyone mention the assassin guild. Might be just the games I've played in but, people don't generally hire assassins to kill monsters way outside of civilization. The class, as written, is more at home in an urban environment. If I was running them à la Disk World they wou...

Re: How myths of magical swords began?

What about the point that the metal used in the swords in the article had to have been heated up to 3000 degrees F? And that allowed the oxygen impurities to be removed, a process that previous to the 1800 had to be done with repeated hammering? How does that play into what you guys know about? Thi...

Re: How myths of magical swords began?

I was watching Forged in Fire last night, and the guy who won used a "forge" made out of a cooking pan, which he had to expand using a satellite dish, in order to forge the Norse Battle Axe he won the contest with. His "bellows"? A hair dryer. Meanwhile, the guy he beat used all...

For a new area and an uncommon monster, a low level bard is likely to NOT know much, if anything, about it without research. Not much use when encountering for the 1st time.

A GM that builds a world and creates geographic centered encounter tables will easily be able to to tell a PC what monsters a given 1st level is likely to be knowledgeable about. Although, it is immense fun to make a veracity roll. "You remember your Great Grandfather telling you how he defeate...

Re: I purchased D&D 5th Ed

As our 5e campaign progresses to the mid-tier of levels, I’m growing to appreciate that it’s much harder to come up with a broken, min-maxed uber-character than in the past two editions. It makes challenging the PCs that much easier. I noticed the same thing. It is also the best D&D edition for...

Re: Have you ever given a dragon as treasure or a magical it

I adore R.E. Howard’s writings. Same goes for the Conan movies. R.E. Howard, unlike Lovecraft, had some positive characters of color. But reading his contemporary horror stories, yeesh. Black Canaan is pretty much about white people killing African-Americans. Yep, and in Conan the Conqueror he had ...

Re: Have you ever given a dragon as treasure or a magical it

And Jim Crow was based on a belief in white supremacy. His essay The Hyborian Age seems to have been his world-building exercise. Putting his stories in the context of that world suggests race was a key element. If you don't agree then I guess we simply disagree. You believe that Howard was a White...

Re: Have you ever given a dragon as treasure or a magical it

For me, the problem with Howard's writings is that his ideas and philosophy date back directly to the Jim Crow era Actually, his fantasy writings have nothing to do with that era. His writings have to do with a person who was a Barbarian in a world modeled after ancient & early medieval times. ...

I am aware of the source. It just seems so embarrassingly dated. That's because it IS dated. It doesn't reflect present culture but, barbaric culture from the past. You might want to read accounts of the Norse (Barbarians) and how they ravaged European "civilization" during the height of ...

Re: Siege Engine & Use of Prime, Level, & Modifier

I see it like that as well, with a slightly simpler approach. 1. You have clear class abilities like spells, turning undead, divine aura... 2. Then you have class skills like scale, climb, pick pockets, saving throws, and listen which are: d20 roll + modifier + level + (prime). I do not let PCs out...

That's nice but, doesn't address RAW as Steve wants it in the PHB. Which is the point here. I don't care about the house ruling of it. Preference isn't the issue.
