Re: When real life intrudes
This has been very helpful. Ironically his character was gravely injured in our last game which was the conclusion of a long multi-session adventure. I think we'll continue the campaign in a few months but I'm not sure whether it would be more fitting to have him die from his wounds or make him an N...

When real life intrudes
Recently I friend of mine who was a great player in my C&C campaign died suddenly. I was wondering if anyone here has had to deal with something like this and what they did about his/her character. He was an avid and longtime gamer. We've obviously suspended the game for now.

Re: The characters of the campaign - heroes or everymen?
I'd have to say a hero is defined by his actions. Now, a PC has many opportunities to become a hero that's the nature of the game but he still needs to do it. Obviously the CK (I prefer GM) helps create the situations that are memorable too.

Re: magic weapons questions
If thrown by a dwarf, the hammer gains the ability to return to its owner. It can be hurled up to a distance of 30’. When hurled, it deals an extra 2d8 points of damage against giants or an extra 1d8 points of damage against any other target. Unless obstructed, it always returns to its owner. I'm in...

magic weapons questions
I have a few question on the Javelin of Lightning and the Dwarven Thrower. First what challenge level should the Dex save be made at? My thought was the maker of the item is at least level 9. The range description of the hammer was a little odd. It seems the max distance is 30' although a normal ham...

Re: Spot Hidden vs. Find Trap
OK, I thought you could only add your Level to class abilities and since nobody has Spot Hidden you could not add it. Which seemed strange to me. For Surprise I think of it as a reaction to a situation, as in who reacts first. I agree there really are two components reading the situation and then re...

Spot Hidden vs. Find Trap
Does anyone use the Find Trap (INT) check for Thieves to spot hidden doors? I know that Spot Hidden is a (WIS) check but it seems to me thieves would be better at it than other classes and should get to use their Level bonus. On a related note I prefer to use (DEX) for surprise. And yes I have a &qu...

Thanks, still finding my way around the books. Again, I have to apologize for the stupid question, it's right there at the end of the section neatly summarized! I've been cramming for my game tonight.

Dwarf bonus against orc, goblin, giants etc.
I don't see any bonus under the racial attributes for Dwarfs in the PHB. Also, there is a minor inconsistency about whether giants like eating dwarfs PHB vs. MM
?
In AD&D 1st edition they got a pretty hefty bonus, especially against giants.

Re: Magic Weapon XP Values
That's correct. If they sold the magic item they could get the experience based on the price. At least that's how AD&D 1st edition did it.

Re: EPP and Character Level Advancement
I tend to look at leveling in terms of adventures. So, if the adventure is to slay a dragon then who ever survives would gain a level. Although I do calculate XP to "check my math" so to speak. The adventures I write usually take 8-12 sessions to complete. I don't think counting XP like a ...

Re: Let's talk house rules and the CKG!
I like the double damage idea. Previously I'd used max damage. Do you let monsters have critical hits as well because if a dragon rolls a 20 on a bite... I was thinking of giving the attacker an extra attack and the opponent a free attack if a 1 is rolled.

Giant Rock Throwing
From the M&T: Rock Throwing: Hill giants can hurl boulders up to 330 feet. A successful attack inflicts 2d8 points of damage. My take of this is 330 feet is the max range so Short Range is 1-110, Medium Range (-2) is 111-220, and Long Range (-6) is 221-330. It seems fair to apply the range modif...

Surprise, Spot Hidden, Listen (A little help here!)
I'm not sure when to apply a characters level to these checks. Obviously a Rogue gets his level applied but does say a Cleric get to apply his level to a listen roll? Also, I'm inclined to combine stats for some of these abilities. It would be nice if these rules were in one place as every character...

I was wondering if the damage bonus for humanoids (orcs etc.) should be applied when using ranged weapons like a bow?

Re: Where to start?
I allow all the characters to have a d8 + CON Bonus for 0 Level HP. I also let them have a second chance roll (say if they rolled a 1 or 2) but if they take it then whatever is rolled counts.

Re: Rangers (& maybe monks or barbarians) Vs Surprise
The ranger is the only class that needs to be reworked in my opinion. He's too much like a fighter/thief. I'd say to fix the surprise problem just give him/her a Prime base roll for all Surprise with an additional +1. I'd also give them some of the basic Druid spells (< 4th level) for animals and pl...

Re: House Rules (Starting a new C&C campaign)
Thanks for listing your House Rules. I decided the DR would be overkill given how the AC game mechanic works but I'm going to allow magic AC to subtract damage similar to how a weapon gets a ToHit bonus and a Damage bonus. 1. 0 Level HP for characters (d8) + CON bonus instead of the usual max HP for...

Re: House Rules (Starting a new C&C campaign)
I really like the many shot idea. Thanks, I plan to use it. I think for critical hits (20) I'll give the attacker another attack at +2 and for a critical miss the defender will get a single +2 attack. I'm using the "Defender stunned or cowering" modifier. This is a nice bonus without a lot...

House Rules (Starting a new C&C campaign)
I've been DMing a group for over a year with AD&D 1st edition rules. Recently I've been looking at other game systems and decided to switch to C&C. I really like the cleaner game mechanics and that it still retains the flavor of AD&D which I grew up with. I was curious about peoples expe...
