Re: Training for level up

I played 3e L5R. l5r is very strict about "going home" to apply xp. It jilted the campaign a bit but it also gave us an excuse to break away from the traditional dungeon crawl. A portion of the campaign was spend wintering over in the phoenix clan's holding and that gave us an excuse to us...

Re: Humans in Funny Suits

As an author by hobby, I've given this very topic a lot of thought in years past. The conclusion I've come to is this: The human centricness we see in many fantasy epics is usually due to the results of being, well, human. We can define in our games what it means to be a demi human, but since we are...

Re: Training for level up

Your characters are in the middle of a daring and time sensitive adventure, saving the damsel from another fell beast from the gaping maw of hell. Hey, cha-ching, I just got enough experience to level up. I don't give out XP mid adventure. Non-issue. Nor do I use "training". XP is just th...

Re: logistical issues with monsters

I pre plan each encounter and have my little booklet with all my baddies premade. BaB, AC, HP, and save M or P. If they are a big bad, i'll include their special abilities such as spells and such. I don't award xp any more, I just let my pc's level up every other play session. As far as weapons and ...

Re: Players Handbook Six

Are the trolls still looking for phb 6 suggestions? The evade maneuver, as written, does not state how the action effects one's turn. As it currently stands, the maneuver is explained in such a way that one could argue it is a free action. TROLL: Cleared up. Inserted this sentence: If evading, the c...

Re: Evade

I use the Evade combat maneuver as the character's action if they declare it. If the character has already performed an action, he cannot use it. The character can move then evade as normal. If the character is already engaged in melee combat, and he chooses to use the Evade CM, he cannot make any ...

Re: Evade

Does using evade take up your action for the turn? Unlike the other actions, The maneuvers section does not state how to use evade. Is it a free action? I treat Evade the same as dodge, only a bigger bonus against one enemy. I assumed the same, but the evade maneuver does not state that you must us...

Re: BtH and the Classes

This is the approach that 5e is taking. A concept called bounded accuracy. Basically the best melee classes at their highest level will only have a bth of +5. I love the idea and have never been a fan of scaling bth. However, cnc handles it nicely. Then again, in cnc I never go beyond level 10 and I...

Re: Advice from you Cthulhu fans

Not that it's necessarily authoritative, but IIRC, the 1st ed. AD&D Deities & Demigods listed them in various ways. The ones beholden to a higher authority were LE; those not so beholden were CE. EDIT: Okay, checking, I'm seeing all sorts of combinations of Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic with Evil ...

Re: Looking for some inspiration

Seriously, game wikis for some of the better computer rpgs have some good ideas. See also the Deep Roads/Orzammar stuff for Dragon Age. The ruins don't have to be ancient either. In The Dark Eye there is an infested Dwarven brewery... I second this, one of the best gaming sessions my team ever has ...

Re: Looking for some inspiration

For the use of ancient dwarf ruins, believe it or not, skyrim is a good place to search. The dwarves are long since extinct but there are many ruins, and stories, to explore which the dwarves left behind.

Make them draw their PC with everything on it, in its place, even a stick figure works. Its a fun task for all when taking a pizza break or some such and the group votes (peer pressure) who has too much crap for their PC.. then they lighten the load as needed. If they won't do it willingly wait til...

Re: Thoughts on encumbrance

That is the whole point of my encumbered tracker, simplicity. If you carry more items than X, where x = your STR value, you're encumbered. Do you use disadvantage? If so, encumbered = roll disadvantage for physical type checks and you are slowed (1/2 movement). Or simpler yet, if you're encumbered, ...

Re: Incomplete bestiary

The games in which I participated usually started at higher levels so we almost never saw the low hd guys, but baddies from different planes were abundant. I've even bumped heads with cthulu. Re: Thoughts on encumbrance

I have 2 ways of measuring encumbrance. 1) str x 10 = max encumbrance value. I did not get it from dndn but a different rpg 2) my current preferred method (which I borrowed from mouseguard) a pc may carry a number of items equal to their str value. Example, a wizard with str 8 may carry 8 items. Thi...

Incomplete bestiary

Even with my many years of gaming, I have yet to encounter certain iconic monsters.

Those with which I have not yet crossed swords:
Goblins
Orcs
Hobgoblins
Beholders (until recently)
Gnolls
Dryads

Just to name a few. What iconic baddies have you missed?

Re: C&C Newb

Another good medium for the 12/18 split (which can be found in the ckg) is to split it from prime and secondary into prime, secondary and tertiary (12/15/18). I really like this method as it gives the characters a third dimension of depth. Instead of having 2 good and 4 bad you get 2 good (three for...

The extra goodies awarded to the other races are helpful and usable, but they pale in comparison to the human's extra prime. Strictly metagaming, an extra prime is going to move an additional 16% of your rolls into the "I can do this!" Category for a total of 50%. All other characters sit ...

Yeah, that would be helpful. I use minis and make my own terrain from hot glue and cardboard. Maps wouls certainly speed up the process.

If I feel a critter's dmg isn't properly represented in it's entry, or if I want a badder bad guy for a specific encounter I award the critter extra damage equal to 1/2 their HD. Or if they are a really bad guy, additional damage equal to their HD. So in the ogre example, if it was Morthrac the corr...
