Re: Humans in Funny Suits

I think it is fine to change things about the races, but well... you kind of have to let people know that things were changed, you know. You can't really try playing something and then be told you are wrong whenever you try to give your character any depth or background. It gets a little... annoying...

Re: Humans in Funny Suits

There has always been something a bit odd about playing a demihuman in a game, but well... there are actually a couple facets to it. First, it gives your character a unique and different appearance. Face it, in fantasy the amount of actual difference in humans in the world, particularly when you tal...

Re: Racial weapon skills

Again, I think you are still underestimating how much is biological. But if you take the biological route, you're assuming that all races mature and learn at the same rates. Maybe the biology of elves is entirely slowed down. Perhaps an elf is not an adult at age 20- they're only an adult elf at (s...

Re: BtH and the Classes

You know-- what I liked about 4E and 13th Age is that at each level all characters get a +1 both to hit and to AC. The difference between Fighters and Wizards then is that fighters tend to be several levels ahead on these stats-- but a Wizard does eventually have the attack bonus and AC of a low-lev...

Re: Racial weapon skills

Again, I think you are still underestimating how much is biological. I could certainly see moving more quietly or hiding better as being something with biological or cultural roots that need not be the results of decades of training. After all, Halflings start off much younger than Elves and they ar...

Re: Racial weapon skills

I always assumed that was just biology. A dog's nose and ears are keener than those of a human and they don't take years to master it. A snow rabbit is just naturally better equipped to live in the snow than a naked human is. They don't require years to master such skills. You don't need to teach a ...

Re: Racial weapon skills

The PHB gives them a +1 bonus, which I assume would simply mitigate the inevitable -4 bonus that nonproficient classes would get while trying to use a weapon they're untrained for? It negates the -4 penalty and gives them a +1 (equivalent of a 1st level fighter). They get to pick one of the weapons...

Re: Racial Variants

Since it is your first time, I can understand why you went astray. Everyone messes this up for their first time. But, I have done work on this kind of thing many times, so maybe I can help you learn a few guidelines that will help you do a bit better. They aren't really racial variants if you just t...

Re: Wizard/illusionist spellbooks

The Illusionist is an oddity among classes. I am a bit surprised honestly that it is even put into the book as a class. The issue is really that it doesn't feel to be using a uniquely different spell-casting tradition. Comparing Illusionist to Wizard, it feels quite a lot like a Fighter who can use ...

Re: New Racial Option: Gamboge Hobgoblins

Thank you. I think with the three I put together here, there is a serious difference between the three is not simply a plus one or minus one to a hit die, but change the way they could be incorporated and used by the GM and they become very different sorts of enemies while at the same time leaving r...

New Racial Option: Gamboge Hobgoblins

Gamboge Hobgoblins Hobgoblins strong, militant race, far more organized and civilized than any other that gets typically branded monsters. They bring order to the world, giving and expecting no quarter or mercy. But as nasty as they are, they are above all things honorable and forthright. Wherever ...

Re: Your Campaign; is it Status Quo?

I am shocked that PCs can take enough actions within a 3-4 hour span to constitute an entire year worth of actions. How long have you played this way?

Re: New Racial Option: Forest Goblins

since I don't know what a Gamboge is, I'm curious to see that. I like these! pop em onto Drivethru and see if you can't make a dime or three, why doncha. :-) Gamboge is just a fancy term for "Yellow-Orange". I couldn't come up with a better name for them. They will be differentiated from ...

New Racial Option: Mountain Orcs

Mountain Orcs Orcs are a race of survivors. Able to thrive dwelling in places that no man would dare to even travel, they have proven to be unbreakable, regardless of how much they have rallied the world around them. Filled with a nearly bottomless well of rage and armed with brute physicality, Orc...

Re: New Racial Option: Forest Goblins

Consider it done. Which should I tackle next? Mountain Orcs or Gamboge Hobgoblins? The later makes for a more universally viable PC race, the former may be tricky to handle mechanically to balance out with the Half-Orc which has no traits from human heritage to speak of, but it would be interesting ...

Re: Racial Attribute modifiers

I am certain they are meant to adjust the attribute numbers, but... well.. changing the bonus could be an interesting way to play it. Unfortunately the thing that would stop it is the half-orc has a -2 penalty which would be kind of way too much to stick onto someone. Though maybe if the Half-Orc co...

New Racial Option: Forest Goblins

This might be a bit strong. For the mechanics I basically started with the Halfling and switched out traits that made no sense with those that do. Ideally they should be almost precisely on par with the Goblins being less tough, more cowardly and generally more disliked, but being a bit more suited ...
