Re: Upcoming Conventions
Oh, one more last point: If playing with the TSR old guard is intensely important to you, go to North Texas RPG con. They have the same VIPs as Gary Con, but far fewer badges are sold. Your chances of getting into that precious VIP event are much better at North Texas. 5-10 years ago, Gary Con prov...

Re: Giants are undersized
I agree with the knock back. In 3.x or Pathfinder, giants could have the feat of "Awesome Blow" which would send a character hurling through the air. I add a bit more strength damage to my giants as well. One of the 3.0 'weather' books had rules on deep snow. Characters were only at half move in dee...

Re: Mighty Propelled Weapons CKG "Pull"
The few times that I have played 5e, they replaced bows with Dex to hit and damage.
Since it’s a game, I guess the rationale can be made for anything.
Similar to backstabbing undead, critical hits against undead, etc.

MARcon in Columbus Ohio. GaryCon in Lake Geneva, WI. I want to attend GameHole Con but I have an awful time getting those dates off, plus the hotels sell out too quickly. I would like Origins to become my new GenCon (I'm retired from GenCon for a while), but not enough OSR stuff to play in there an...

Re: Mighty Propelled Weapons CKG "Pull"
For cost I use the initial cost of the bow plus: (+0=+0; +1=+100gp; +2= +300gp; +3= +600 gp; +4= +1000gp) (I forget where I pulled this from, but I've been using it that way for a long time now.) I've seen similar rules to that. I'm trying to think if the rule I seen was the same or a straight +100...

Re: Playing at the Table
I'm still at level 3, with leanings toward 2. I just ran a game this past weekend at a convention, and I had the battle mat out and dice, markers, etc. None of the players seemed interested in using those devices and wanted theater of the mind. I personally don't see that all that much any more, bu...

Re: Favorite magic items
That was a pretty decent set of books. I may have to dig them out and give them another read. R- My favorite was the First Book of Lost Swords when Mark's brother (?) picks up Town Saver and the sword goes berserk. Naturally, at the time I read it, I was bombarding my DM for it. He raised his eyebr...

Re: Playing at the Table
#1: Paper, dice, pencils, and the core book. #4 makes it a board game. #5 makes it a video game. I've seen a lot of board game movements where players are counting and calculating the best approach, etc. If they do it more than twice, I'm typically giving the "you're wasting time" look. Very close ...

Re: Playing at the Table
Interesting. I was expecting a lot more 1-3 responses.
At one point, the group I played with did 2nd Ed Combat & Tactics.
It raised me up to a 4. Slowly I'm moving towards a 4-5 range. 5 for bigger battles, etc.

Playing at the Table
How do you play Castles and Crusades at the table? 1 - Complete theater of the mind. 2 - Theater of the mind and occasionally putting some dice down to show where you're at. 3 - Using the best method as it makes warranted. A fair combination of both. 4 - Vast majority of encounters take place on the...

Re: Origins... who's going?
I haven't been to Origins in 17-18 years. I would love to make it out but I don't think the dice are with me.
I've gone to GaryCon and will be going to Gamehole later this year.
Finance wise - I think the wife would be happy with me not going.
One must pick battles carefully.

There's also a nice article in Footprints #4, "Magic Items in their Proper Place" (by Mike Stewart) that I find pretty useful as a guide. I'm like scrooge with his money.. not many. I like flavor and unique items over simple buffing items. But they really should have some.. its in the fantasy setting. Agreed. I learned this from one of my players giving him a "knights crown" which increased his mental abilities. He said, "eh" and tos...
