Re: A question of HD
But the answer isn't to make mechanics match the depiction in video games (and maybe you're not saying it is). Nope, in fact i might suggest the exact opposite- put animations in the game that illustrate the harshness of combat. IE, a warhammer blow should be animated with the victim cringing, bein...

Re: A question of HD
HD for PC's determines HP. In the later OD&D & 1st/2nd Ed D&D game paradigm (of which C&C is firmly ensconced), HP above 1st level is NOT that actual physical damage the body can handle. So, race doesn't play a part really. That raises an idea for an interesting mechanic. Perhaps al...

But really, the quote you gave is sufficient as I understand it. Ah, but that's because you came from the old-school line of thought first (at least, that is my impression). So your brain already makes that association without the explicit descriptors of "luck", "endurance", &qu...

Re: A question of HD
I always hear this in forums (usually from people who think HP needs fixing) but I never actually meet these people who think every HP relates to a piece of skin or something. I've met people who WISH it did, who don't like the idea of abstraction, but nobody who actually thinks they already do. Th...

Re: A question of HD
I never found it confusing. I never saw any contradiction in cure spells with wounds in the name. After all, it only makes sense that our exertion, stamina and efforts would largely be driven by our physical condition. I'm not saying you specifically were confused. All i'm saying is that many peopl...

Re: A question of HD
That's how classic Traveller does it (basically) and it was brutal, but very fun (and deadly!). It's that way in Numenera, and pretty much everything you do is fueled by your abilities, so you can expend less and less effort on tasks as you are damaged. So, instead of changing the probability direc...

Re: A question of HD
I think every edition and derivation has claimed that hit points are an abstraction of luck, exertion, etc. If it's meant to be something different it's been given its own name- vitality points, wound points, etc. But the problem is this notion of hit points gets confused with other factors of the g...

Re: A question of HD
I'm not sure if it made it into the final game, but in several of the D&D 5E playtests, they used a mechanic where dwarves had their base hit die type increased by one die type. So most fighters used a 1d10, but a dwarven fighter used a d12. A dwarven wizard would use a d8 instead of the base d6...

Re: Do you run C&C with the flavor of a certain D&D edition?
I don't think i have a simple answer. I use the setting to feed C&C, but i also use C&C to enhance the setting. My setting of choice is Birthright (which was designed for AD&D 2nd Ed), so i use few of the default races and classes from C&C as-is. Instead, they are tweaked to match th...

Re: Do you fudge die rolls? Creature Stats? On the fly?
I think fudging is ok so long as it's in the name of fun. If a particular lucky roll would wipe out half the party and ruin the adventure outright, then that doesn't seem worth it. I'd fudge that. Alternatively, if they encounter a brand new particularly-deadly danger, then some warning to the party...

Re: RPGnet has Prime Questions
The default rule is one cannot even roll if the ability belongs to another class. IF the GM is generous and allows the fighter to try and pick a lock, then no level bonus is allowed. Well, it says it's recommended he not be allowed. Whether it is allowed is not so much a matter of CK generosity but...

Oh is that what he meant- that's his house rule? That would make sense. Just wasn't clear from that message (unless i misread something).Rigon wrote:By going from Steve's post about class abilities being prime, I'd imagine that was how they play it in their home game.

Re: RPGnet has Prime Questions
That might follow from the prime/primary/secondary thread with Stephen, in which stats that are class abilities are rolled as if they were the prime stat. I don't know if it was discussed, but maybe by that logic non-class would be non-prime? I don't know. My understanding is you simply don't add l...

Re: RPGnet has Prime Questions
So, i see that Davis replied to that theard, though i think he said something incorrect. The fighter, never having been taught how to pick a pocket devises his own methodology and gives it a shot. Even though the fighter has a dex prime, the base target number is still 18 because it another classes ...

Re: Defense Score from CKG
Do you think the DR numbers as listed in the CKG are too high? Assuming the DR values equal the AC (don't have it handy), then no, i don't think they're too high. Using AC as the DR value is not only simple for conversions, but it's a good value to relate to other weapons. After all, a knight in fu...

Re: Dark fantasy genre
As others have said, it depends on your definition of "dark". For a Gothic setting, i'd suggest Ravenloft (AD&D 2nd Ed), which should port to C&C quite easily. Actually there is a well done C&C Ravenloft conversion which you can find online. Horror and Sanity checks are always ...

Re: Defense Score from CKG
I've used a variation of the CKG's version. I find that typical fights (ie, with bad guys that have damage similar to standard weapons) last longer. I think it's because that while you might get hit more often, it doesn't make up for the extreme reduction in damage. That said, if you're fighting a d...

Re: I think I have hit upon a "Spell Point" system I can lik
My worry about your method Treebore is that it treats levels as directly proportional to one another- IE, that a 2nd level spell is twice as powerful as a 1st level spell, and half as powerful as a 4th. I don't know that spells typically scale that way, and thus point totals may cause an unintended ...

Re: Rune Mark Inconsistencies?
I agree with Treebore. I find the Runemark to be too fiddly for my liking. My favorite "runemark" is the Runecaster class from the AD&D 2nd Edition Vikings Historical Reference. It converts to C&C very easily, has great flavor, and is not complicated in the least. I would love to s...
