Re: Instant Effects Question...Petrification
This is true, however, it goes back to the "formula". The PCs in this case will have no idea what they are going up against, and honestly, will not always know what they are going up against. That's part of the dangerous nature of the game. If they are high enough level to be taking on mo...

Re: Racial weapon skills
I wasn't asking a question, but making a statement about what I personally did and asking what other people did/thought. Though I'll have to read the PHB again. I had a different understanding about the BTB rules, but it's been awhile since I looked at it. At first I thought about the -3 to hit. Th...

Re: Epic heroes deserve epic enemies
The most epic enemies are friendly NPCs that turn on them. Especially when they were far too naive and trusting in the first place. Abandoning the PCs in the middle of the dungeon for self-preservation (and make no mistake, it was leaving them for dead), well, it really doesn't give players a warm f...

Re: From Player to DM
This is pretty excellent advice, if it can be pulled off. I learned a lot about running games when a very good DM ran a group of my friends and me through Keep on the Borderlands. I still run that module the same way he did. Also, I occasionally had a hard time getting a game together, so I'd run th...

Re: Poisons
Call me crazy, Fiff, but I'd use the level of the assassin making the poison as the CL. The poisons are arranged by type/effect/cost/what-have-you but they don't necessary relate to being harder to resist (read: higher CL), do they? I look at like the chart represents effects, and cost per effect -...

Re: Poisons
I actually don't have the CKG yet, and some things might have changed while I've been away, but I believe the philosophy (at least in part) is that the CL is a factor of the individual who created the poison. The CKG contains no core rules for the game. Only optional "house" rules. Oh, I ...

Re: Poisons
I should also add that I believe natural poisons are CLed to the HD of the creature. This would be consistent with what I posted above.
But, I tend to wing things based on how they were done in 2005.
I am not up to speed on latest printings or changes in philosophy.

What Omote said.
It's essentially a giant nasty culture of a specific type of organism. As long as it can feed and has moisture, bingo.
I did an Ooze Lair for the ill-fated Halls of Adventure. I attest that oozes are completely offensive to nature.

It was a long time before I got to read Howard's Conan, but when I did, it was an amazing experience. The imagination there is incredible. I'm not sure I have a favorite, but I liked The Hour of the Dragon, Black Colossus, and The Tower of the Elephant as standouts. Red Nails was Conan at his most v...

That idea about conscious ghoul/ghasts is pretty slick.
