Re: WOW! Multicellular Life Evolves in Laboratory - in 60 d

Keep it civil. No name calling. No innuendos about intelligence etc. Nothing. Everyone on here is an adult. We ALL know how to conduct ourselves appropriately. We KNOW when we are tryiing to offend someone. Healthy discussion CAN be enlightening. Let's make it so. Or the thread will be closed and o...

Re: WOW! Multicellular Life Evolves in Laboratory - in 60 d

The evolution discussion, specifically about the definition of "theory" reminds me of an excellent old Onion article regarding the "Intelligent Falling" debate. That is quite a humorous article, though it really began on the Usenet a few years prior to it being written. It also ...

However, it is true that macro-evolution, that is the Theory of Evolution of Species, does not have such incontrovertible evidence. ... This may very well be the case, but it is not, and cannot at this time be proven. I think genetics researchers would take offense to this statement. Anyway, you ar...

Micro-evolution is FACT, this is an observable phenomenon. We have observed and documented changes to life forms over the periods of history we have been able to uncover. Yes, Evolution of Species is a fact that has been directly observed. All else is scientifically up in the air as much successful...

Re: Declaration of actions

Definitely require declaration, IMO it speeds combat, not slow it down. Everyone must decide what to do, and have a time limit (within reason) to make their declaration. Actions can change on your turn (actually ends up moving you down the initiative order), but again within reason. If someone wants...

It is funny, but in the way this experiment has been run, they tend to show proof for intelligent design not natural selection. First, they (the experimenters) have determined which cellular globules they will utilize, the more "advanced" clusters that are heavier and settle to the bottom ...

Re: Read Magic: C&C game mechanics question

If I follow you it sounds like you are suggesting a reasonable compromise, thanks "koralas": Keep the cantrip because it is faster but given time, arcane magic can be translated without it. That makes "Read Magic" a convenience instead of necessity. Makes sense. Right on the mon...

Re: Read Magic: C&C game mechanics question

I like the Read Magic spell as a cantrip more than a 1st level spell. It made sense as a 1st level spell in the days before cantrips, but since the advent of cantrips, it made sense more as a 0-level spell, being the first spell that was learned. Why is something like read magic needed? Well simply,...

Re: First game next week: Help me with rules clarifications!

Don't look at it as more restrictive, it really is more open since you can attempt just about anything. You really only get a single "action", attack, move/attack, cast, etc., but the listed actions are not the only things players (or NPCs) can do; as was stated, use common sense when adju...

1- Depending on how you want to handle this, whether non-trained character can attempt skills from other classes, then with the SIEGE engine, the wizard can attempt a disguise, since it is a Cha based skill, if they character has Cha as a prime, then they get that check at a 12, if not then 18. Great, glad to hear it. SCC is one of my favorite dice games since it is simple and fast. Re: Half-Elf Attribute Check Modification

Redwulf, you are correct, the +2 is a bonus over and above the bonus you get for a high attribute score. So the total bonus is +5, while the target number is still 18. Alternatively you can think of it as making the challenge base 16, thus you have Prime: 12, 1/2elf favored attribute: 16, non-Prime:...

Re: Games and Contests of Skill

For Arm Wrestling, consider letting a Dex prime get the a bonus as well, +3 or +4 sounds about right to me. The reasoning for this is that while a high strength is crucial in the contest, quick reflexes and the application of leverage are very important as well. Having been witness to quite a few co...

Re: Games and Contests of Skill

For "log-wrestling" as you describe it, if you "hit", the person struck should have the dex save with a TN equal to the result of the to-hit roll. Thus a fighter of 3rd level with Str 16 rolls a 12, the result of a 17 is the TN of the dex check. Or you could modify the grappling ...

How to deal with "hordes"

There was a discussion on a request for help with new monsters that spawned an arc about dealing with "hordes". Arduin commented that if only two opponents can strike at you, the numbers behind them wouldn't matter when responding to Gundoggy's method of granting a +1 per creature pressing...

For example, 10 orcs/kobolds/whatever attacks at +10. One attack per round for the group. That type of rule, often, makes no sense. "Horde" or not, if only 2 can hit at your character in a round, the number behind them makes no difference whatsoever. I would disagree to some extent. But l...

Re: High Level Monsters for C&C adventure - 24th level+

A house rule I used was that for each additional low level humanoid that attacks in a group I just added +1 to hit. This way a large group can inflict damage and as the PC hacks them to pieces their efficiency goes down. With only 1 or 2 attacks per round from the PC, this 'group' can remain effect...

Re: Removing cleric spell lists...

Gotta disagree. Cleric and Wizards are not equal in power. Clerics have far fewer offencive spells. The cleric also will still need to reserve spells to heal. More "useful" = more "powerful". It would be similar to MU's casting at will instead of memorizing. Same mechanic, same ...

No magic, or ultra-low magic? What I mean by ultra-low would be something akin to Tolkien's Middle Earth. There is just enough magic to bring about a bit of the fantastic, orcs, giant eagles, balrogs, wraiths, magic rings, and magic blades, but no real PC spell casters. As was mentioned by Go0gleple...

For a camp fire, it would become immobile centered on the piece that started the fire. So, you could feed it. I don't otherwise progress the spell as I wanted it to be only 1st level. Arduin, I like the spell, though it seems quite powerful for a 1st level spell. Compare it to Darkness which is a blanket 20' radius and lasts 10 mins/level. This spell is a much more focused spell, and allows most of the benefits of having a fire, without the penalties, plus the long duration, much...
