Re: ghosts

I thought incorporeal could still be hit by magic weapons (of specified power) but not regular / master work weapons. Correct. Isn't that what I said? I know it's not reflected in the wording for the ghost, but other creatures that can be only hit by magic weapons, e.g. the Vulcreed from Monsters &...

Re: ghosts

The incorporeal keyword only covers whether the creature can be struck by magic weapons. Resistance or immunity to selected spells and spell-like effects would be presented in a separate keyword. Thus the ghost can be affected by spells, and the spellcaster doesn't have to be ethereal to cast them.

Re: Late / Early - New Monster - Gobblen [related to Turkey

You'd better be a good boy, or else Santa won't bring you any. By the way, there are different flavors of handwavium. The type the Trolls used for the original monster XP values was classic Dr. Pepper flavored. That stuff, while common, is highly prized and almost godlike in its taste. The small amo...

Re: Late / Early - New Monster - Gobblen [related to Turkey

Host them on Google Docs and provide a link. That or make a PDF out of it. Now, is my value weak? I actually don't think so, but the reason why requires a bit of explanation. The original version of the official C&C system was a generous application of handwavium. In essence Steve picked a number he...

Re: New Monster -- Hydracat

As you wish, given that this is something you did off the cuff. The RAW is quite specific however in that only beneficial specials get XP bonuses, especially as I rewrote the specials definitions. Having a vulnerability does not make a creature any less valuable, though that might make for a good ho...

Re: New Monster -- Hydracat

Well, the multiplier for the number of heads is I feel an issue. It's way too generous. Remember, I calculate XP values according to the RAW, and according to that XP for the 8HD version is 975+8. Multiply that by 18 and you have 17,550+144 per hit point. Way too generous given even the most powerfu...

Re: Forums Link on Main Page

From appearances, the Knights of the Crusade forums are using Drupal instead of PHPBB. You get the essentials there, bold and italic, line spacing, bullets, hyperlinks and images. That's all most of us use anyway, so yes, I'd say it's a viable replacement in its current state.

Re: New Monster -- Hydracat

The XP award as given in your writeup specifies +8 per head. Based upon how it reads, that would mean the base + (8 times 3d6 heads). That would make the bonus 24XP to 144XP, which is undervalued. So what exactly do you mean here? Is it intended to be (X+(YxHP))xZ heads, or is it X+(YxHPxZ heads)? W...

Re: Forums Link on Main Page

This came up in an email discussion I had with Steve the other day. They want people to use the KotC forums, so the link was changed. I've been told that these forums will stay open, but I personally believe (and will tell Steve this) that with the KotC forums up and running, these forums should be ...

Re: EXP adjustment for when not using EXP for treasure ???

@Lurker: The game by design awards EXP for treasure accumulated, and by design the treasure is meant to be spent, not hoarded. Thus you need to charge for training, charge for new equipment, and basically find ways to siphon the money from the characters. Any house rule that foregoes awarding EXP fo...

Re: EXP adjustment for when not using EXP for treasure ???

You could do what I do. I award EXP for treasure at a rate of 1 EXP per gold piece spent, meaning if the fighter spends 50gp on his tavern room he gets 50 EXP. I also don't award EXP for magic items. The magic item must be sold to someone outside the party, and then the profit from the sale spent to...

Re: Bergholt Adventure, Monster Undefined

According to my copy of the manuscript, this was intended to be similar to the lurker above. If you have access to the AD&D stats for the creature, use those to flesh out the creature. To point out, I noted in the manuscript that there wasn't a "new monsters" section and that one needed to be added,...

Re: Crusader Companion - why not "official"?

The laws of Washington state, where WotC is located, are likely the laws in effect here. In any event, the OGL is more like a EULA, and courts have found that EULAs are enforceable even if you don't sign anything and don't even open the package. The lesson here is, if you don't want your stuff used ...

Re: Crusader Companion - why not "official"?

If individual authors wish to sue a publisher for publishing their open game content for profit despite a verbal agreement to the contrary, they can. They will likely lose; the OGL has the greater force of law behind it as it is a written contract. Since the verbal agreement and the OGL conflict her...

Re: Crusader Companion - why not "official"?

Just to add to or amplify what Peter said, Section 2 of the OGL prohibits setting conditions upon usage of open game content. So if Peter were to hypothetically begin charging for the Companion - which he isn't - the authors of the works have no recourse. They have no legal standing to sue, because ...

Re: Crusader Companion - why not "official"?

Any of the authors in the Companion, including myself, could take their work and attempt to profit from it. After all, it is their work and they can do what they like. However, releasing work as open game content allows anyone to take the work and attempt to profit from it. By releasing the work as ...

Yeah, I don't see having the Doctor being a woman as changing the "canon". After all, once upon a time, the Time Lords had to be reproduced naturally at some point in time. So as long as the episodes keep being as fun and entertaining as they have been, I don't care. This isn't canon because the or...
