Troll Lord Games

Last night I bought the Mother of All Treasure Tables from Necromancer and Kenzer.

Great stuff, with very little edition-specific content.

It got me thinking about adventure design, though. I generally start with the story, then work around locations and monsters. Because of the sheer amount of detail to each treasure entry, it gives me the idea of making the treasure the first point of adventure design. Just what is so special about that half-melted religious icon? How did it get that way and why?

I don't think I've ever designed an adventure that way before in all my years of gaming.

That is a unique way to start designing an adventure, but give it a try. To use an way-to-oft-used overexpression, thinking outside the box like this is a great way to stimulate the creative juices. Give it a whirl and see what develops.

Question; did you get your print copy of MATT yet?

I've done "design around a treasure" but that was to get a paladin his holy avenger, or the wizard his staff of the magi. Also, I've done it numerous times for quests or magic item/spell component hunts. Also, some games, like Gamma World, seem to mandate such an approach.

Hope you have fun with the book. I've not convinced myself I need/want MATT, since I've yet to see a preview that made me think "ooooh." Guess its because there are no magic items in the book, and that disappoints me to no end. Its all mundane stuff... I can create that with the D&D RC and the 2E Adventures HC.

I too am concerned whether or not MATT is for me. I personally like tons of mundane treasures, but it seems like MATT won't provide extensive lists of various, random mundane treasures to roll up, which is what I was very much looking forward to.

The treasures are mundane in only being magical. Its the descriptions given, and the level of detail of these descriptions, that sets this book apart.

They give excerpts of these descriptions on ENWorld and the Necromancer boards.

And to weigh in on your question, from what I looked at, the treasures do come in sets (which are random within a gp category), but since they list the individual price of each item in the set, it'd be easy to pick and choose from within that set.
