What keeps you playing rpgs after all these years?

What do you get, or most enjoy from playing rpgs?

Hanging out with friends while my wife spends the day with my sister-in-law and mother-in-law.

I used to be more into fleshing out a fantasy setting and cooperatively constructing am amazing storyline BUT my new group is a "beer & pretzels" crowd that gets together for poops and giggles.

its a sanity saving outlit for my overactive imagination.

I would rather be entertained by my friends than by my TV.

It's a great way to share an immersive game with friends. The laughs, the stories, the stress of needing to roll the perfect die while everyone in the group silently watches... Also, post-game chatter of the events.

And to me, there is nothing better then talking with your friends and fellow players years later, recounting the stories of past adventures. As a CK it is incredibly rewarding to have your players remember fondly the aspects of a campaign.

Oh, so very many things:
Where in the real world could I swing a sword lethally?Or fly on a pegasus?Or gesture & mumble, creating magic?
...when I play RPGs, I get:
all of the above-posted-by-others stuffstories whose happenings and outcomes are ever more surprising than many books I've read, infinitely superior to TV (ugh!), and these stories (many of epic proportions) are woven by all the participants (even the dead ones!)intellectual and emotional stimulation of the highest calibreto be a heroto be a villain, really eeeevil (yet hurt no one, how cool is that?)

Escapism.

The creativity of running a world

Watching the players smile when they roll a natural 20 and groan when they roll a 1

Being brave when in real life I am a coward.

It began as a way to escape/handle my life as a pre-teen. As time continued it just became a very important aspect of my life.

Because the voices in my head get really irritable if I don't.
Srsly, I enjoy spending time with my friends and creating worlds, stories and adventures. I enjoy the camaraderie and the escapism from the stress of daily life.

In my pre-D&D years (pre-1986) I was big into fantasy and sci-fi. When I discovered tabletop RPGs, it was a chance for me to act out some of the fantas that had been mixing around in my head the years prior.

I still got plenty of ideas, but these days I do it for the camaraderie just as much as for my fantasy fix.

I play rpgs for numerous reasons as stated above plus...

I get to enjoy exploring certain concepts or ideas.

I enjoy watching the players become immersed and begin to co-create a mutual fantasy world as opposed to passivle y sitting there with blank looks as if they were watching tv.

A form of self expression. Of late I have struggled with human relations both professionally and and non. It's good to know that uncompromised ideals are alive and well and the concepts of good and evil are not blurred as they are in RL. I may be an unprofessional midlevel cubicle monkey in real life, but for 4 hours on a Saturday night I am a hero, a slayer of demon gods, and a beacon of Truth.

In fantasy not only is blunt Truth expected of me, it is required. (My paladin)
In RL I seem to be forced to tap dance a silly lap around Truth as I am expected to hide behind profesionalism and political correctness.

In RL I must compromise with my enemy...in fantasy I can simply smite them down!

- a creative outlet
- the laughs and camaraderie
- gives me an excuse to let out the 13-year-old trapped in this 34-year-old body.

1. Hang out with my buddies and throw dice
2. Escapism
3. Feed the creativity bug
4. Escapism
5. Drinks with aforementioned buddies after the game
6. Escapism

My top 20 Reasons to Play C&C as a Castle Keeper.

1- You get to kill people.
2- You get to kill those same people over and over again.
3- Low Self esteem pumped up by being all powerfull.
4- The free food you munch at other peoples houses.
5- Not required to do much heavy lifting.
6- The extra sex from role playing with your wife after everyone else has left.
7- The extra sex from role playing with one of your players the next day.
8- All those thousands and thousands of pencils.
9- The cops never look in the bottom of your dice bag for drugs.
8- Even in prison you will have tons of friends.
9- The chance to watch a large group of good friends beat the holy crap out of each other over a ring.
10- F'ing over the winner of that fight by granting his wish exactly as worded.
11- Getting to buy stuff for friends that YOU want to play.
12- Hot chicks in chainmail.
13- Not killing your friends is a great sign of love and affection.
14- You can kill them anyway in very horrid ways and just look sad about it.
15- Cheetos.
16- Taking revenge in game for out of game slights,disapointments or lack of life fullfillment.
17- Telling a player who is angry about your rules call to shut it and play then when the same rule comes up later but it would be in your favor to do it his way.....doing it his way.
18- Baths,Jobs,clean cloths,money,life skills,grades,healthy lungs,a long rap sheet,a car burried in trash,dead bodies, doesn't matter anywhere near as much to the people around you as long as you are ready to game with that new dungeon you have been working on.
19- Castle Keepers are like rock stars to Geek chicks. Do things right and watch the panties fly.
20- You get to kill people.

Hmmm... I must be doing something wrong. Perhaps some sage advice in the new CKG will clear that up.
