PC Game: Neverwinter Nights

Just a heads up that GOG has released NeverwinterNights Diamond (Original game+all expansions) for $10 (they accept paypal)
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/neverwin ... nd_edition
For those not in the know, NWN is probably the best attempt at a D&D style computer game. It is a bit dated visually now, and uses the dreaded 3e ruleset, but it is still quite fun. In fact, having the computer keep track of all the annoying pluses of 3e makes 3e run pretty smoothly
The extra cool part is that the NWN community has produced tons of additional fan made content. So, for example, you could download various Pen and Paper module conversions and play those to your hearts content. The quality is mixed, obviously, as they are fan made, but some are quite good (most have reviews so you can judge ahead of time)
Here is a list of the PnP modules available (for free):
http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Mo ... lect_id=14
There are also files there to improve the look, improve henchman AI, add henchmen to any game, add many many new PC classes, add psionics etc. etc.
The extra extra cool part is you can also play it online with friends, which is actually a more fun way to play.
Playing D&D in a computer game can never match the fun of pen and paper, and 3e is not as fun as C&C, but for those lazy weekend afternoons when your pen and paper game has been cancelled, you might want to give this a look
Note: some GOG games can have a bit of trouble with Win 7 64 bit so if you use that check the forums of the game for info:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/neverwinter ... 1288206327
The game page lists it as fully compatible with XP, Vista, and Win 7 (32 and 64 bit)

Man, NWN was a blast. In fact, NWN is probably the last computer RPG I played. It may be time to re-up.
That only makes me wish that the Balder's Gate and Torment series of D&D games would come back too... in an upgraded fashion fixing all of the bugs.

You are in luck, my son!
The above website (GOG) has both Baldur's gate and Planescape Torment. And they are only $10! In all cases, GOG promises that their games are fully patched (so most bugs are gone, we hope!) and they have already been pre-adjusted to work with DOSBOX for those with newer versions of Windows (like Vista or Win7). Every game is also DRM free, which is nice
I use XP, so I can't guarantee how they work with win7 etc. but I have had no problems
GOG has hinted at 2 more RPGs to come: everyone assumes it will be Baldurs Gate II, and Icewind Dale II, which would join NWN, BG I, ID I, and Temple of Elemental Evil (which was buggy as heck on initial release 5-10 years ago or whenever it was but there is a free mod you can get which makes it quite fun)
For those looking for non RPG games, they have quite a selection of those too. Many of the games are a bit lacking in the graphics department (being from 5-10-15 years ago), but the playability and replayability is very high. It really is a nifty site

Dude... when I saw they had a fixed version of Planescape Torment, I DL'd the hell out of that. Playing Torment right now. Really, one of the best D&D games every made, if not THE best. Even if it is set in the Planescape setting, it is really just that awesome.

Just went to GoG and purchased the NwN diamond. Couldnt resist even though I have all of the original stuff in the boxes. This gives me full win7 64 bit compatibility.

Ben's playing my copy of NWN2 on his Win7/64 box now - a few glitches but seems to work OK most of the time. He's had fun trying out different classes. (FWIW, I enjoyed the game a lot myself. Bioware has all their stuff in one bag.)
But I think he's also coming to appreciate what I do about simpler rule systems, after he spent half an hour trying to figure out what feat he needed to use a bastard sword.

If you've never played NwN 1 then get the diamond edition from GoG for 10 bucks, chief. Aside from the graphics, NwN 1 is better in every way than NwN 2 (imo!).

I never really clicked with NWN2 either. It was prettier, and the improved system it had for running a party seemed like a good idea, but I still prefer NWN.
Partly, it might have been the extensive set of mods and old PnP modules for NWN. I couldn't believe it when I read a review that told me that with NWN I could play through modules like the Tomb of Horrors or the Giants modules and all the other great ones. I went out and bought it that day.
Then again, NWN2 has been out for awhile so it probably has some good mods now too.
One thing to mention, for those who take GOG up on their offer of NWN. Because all GOG games are DRM free, you do still need a CD Key from Bioware/Gamespy if you want to play multiplayer. If you are just using it for single player you don't need one. Playing modules in multiplayer (or even better, with a DM) is a really fun way to play. To get a CD Key, you have to make a request for one (it is free). I think the info is on the NWN support page at GOG.

Thanks for the link boss. I played thru and finished up to Hordes of the Underdark, but never knew anything about the Kingmaker expansion. I guess I fell out of it by then. Saw and heard of NWN2, never tried it. I'll check it out now though

Just an update to advise people that the platinum version of Neverwinter _2_ is now for sale at steam during their big sale for a mere 7 gold pieces (until tomorrow morning, the last day of their grand sale)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/2760/
Although not as great as NWN1 (in its day), and although it is itself a bit dated now, it's still a fun romp through D&D goodness, with the excellent option of DMed multi player, and downloadable modules, which really makes NWN shine as a game.

The best part of NWN and BG was I could play them with my wife. As much as we loved Oblivion, it sucked not being able to play it together. But mention that you wish it was mutliplayer, and fans pull out their pitchforks and light their torches to hunt you down like the monster you are, because "everything else is multiplayer, so don't ruin our game!" (I assume they're talking about MMOs, but those don't offer the kind of multiplayer experience my wife and I look for.)

Yeah, Neverwinter Nights 0 (the original goldbox) is a lot of fun.

Yes, MMO and NWN multiplayer are quite different, I think.
NWN can be played with other players, as you did, and it is quite fun to run through old TSR classics with your friends, but where it really shone was if someone acted as DM. Then all dialogues had a human behind them, and all combats too. Good fun.
The MMO style of PvP or events never really looked as fun to me (especially compared to NWN with a human DM), but I do not know much about MMOs so maybe it's plenty fun too

I don't think I ever played that one, but I did enjoy Unlimited Adventures, which I think used a similar engine, but allowed one to download and play through a huge trove of classic modules.
The graphics, roleplay, breadth, sound, AI, etc. of UA all pale compared to the more modern games like NWN (let alone the really modern games now like the Witcher 2 etc.) but the old Unlimited Adventures did one thing wonderfully: party combat. This is because it is strictly turn based (like D&D) and it used the old 1e ruleset. So, as a pure combat simulator, it can still be quite fun, but for an immersive world, hundreds of modules, and ability to have multiplayer with a human DM, NWN is the champ.
Interestingly, the open source version of Unlimited Adventures (called Dungeoncraft) is close to release, but I have read it will not be very compatible with all of the old downloadable classic modules, which is unfortunate.
