Hacklopedia of Beasts looking real good...

Expensive. $60.00. Considering its full color heavy grade paper with a faux leather cover and full color cover and nearly 400 pages, it is likely worth it.

As you can see by the sample PDF it is very C&C friendly too. I have found a good "rule of thumb" to be to cut the BtH in half to determine C&C HD and BtH. Not always, but often enough.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Looks pretty good. However, is the new HoB going to be goofy and have the comedic element to it like Hackmaster 4th edition?

No. The parody humor of the old Hackmaster was required by the court agreement. That is not applicable to this edition/version.

Gonna disagree with you Tree.

The gobbldey g**k of a stat block looks like a mess.

The new HM is a completely new game, no longer based on old D&D.

I use the old version of HM Hacklopedias because they are esentialy a clone of 1/2E AD&D.

This new version will require me to hand convert every monster from the looks of the write up.

The parody was a lisenceing agreement with WOTC. I do wonder when someone complains of the humor in the old HM, did you simply not notice the same humor was strewn throughout 1e AD&D.

It probably helps me that I have ran the new HM so know what the stat blocks are telling me.

Most of it i can figure out what it means.

But i would still need to convert it before i could use it in a game.

For most monsters all you need to know is their HD and what their powers are for C&C.

HM is kind of similar in that they do opposed rolls, and you add the HD or level of the spell or "power" to the respective roll.

So it actually works pretty well for C&C with us just using their HD to set the CL.

Plus I don't remember seeing a monster power in HM that doesn't have it equivalent power already in C&C. I'll give it a harder look, but I would say using HM monsters is about equal to using Monsters from 2E AD&D, and easier than using 3E monster sources.

I have only seen the new HM so I cannot compare to the old.

But an entire chapter of charging your dice with power I would hope...is considered humor.

Your talking about the Basic rule book, and no, they were pretty serious about it.

I always failed to understand the slant that HM isn't to be taken seriously. Sure it's silly -- I've never played a game with any group that wasn't silly -- but there's a lot of serious to the game, too.

I've had the chance to look over the pdf ... it's really staggeringly gorgeous. They take it the monsters within very seriously, and the writing is outstanding. I tend to find most sourcebooks difficult to read through ... I enjoyed reading the HoB the way I might a good book.

Anyway, it makes me long for more. I wish the other books were out already ... and I can't wait until I have it in my hands. It's really a special looking book!

They say it is going to top the Aces and Eights book, so that means it is going to be a truly awesome book.

I'm probably Kenzer & Company's biggest cheerleader, so take this for what you will...

I think my pupils dilate every time I look at the new HoB. The layout is great, the art is stellar, and the information is interesting. I've had the chance to play a big part in proofreading the first release (Beta 1.0) and I found myself enjoying the flavor as much as I would enjoy reading a novel. It reads very well, and it really leaves me feeling excited for the future of HackMaster and Kalamar!
