Neverwinter Nights 2

Post by Breakdaddy »

I am picking this gem up at lunch and can't wait to get it installed and start playing it. Huds0n is going with me so I know he'll have it as well. Anyone else plan on picking up a copy and playing some? I wouldnt mind getting a multiplayer thing happening on there when time permits.

Nice! I used to have an NWN server here at work and even had gone to the trouble of DLing a persistent world and modding it extensively. I might have to ressurrect the server now!

When they make it so you don't have to play using d20 rules... I'll be interested again. As is, at least the last version... the game quickly got too easy.

True, the game was a power-gamers m**tur**t session at later levels, but it was still a fun LAN PARTY game IMO. That's why I'm going to try to get back into NWN with the release of this sequel.

I took an existing persistant world and then wiped out whole sections of it and started replacing them with stuff from my own gameworld. It was fun while I was whipping it up.

I dunno about LAN parties, these days, but when it comes to CRPGs I like to play solo, to be honest, mostly because I get tired of the people who are just "better" (ie, cheat, or play constantly and have everything memorized) acting like they're somehow superior. Also, I figure it'll be harder if I just play with myself (haha.)

OMG I get pwn'd by those people all the time when I used to Play NWN. You are right serleran, those people do suck and stuff, but I've had some good experiences at LAN parties where the people were pretty cool about it, and that made it fun. Expecially when we all started out playing a newer mod that had just come out.

My best experiences were when the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh mod came out for NWN. We giot a bunch of us together for an improptu LAN party and we all sucked at the game. that was probably the best experience I ever had playing NWN. We all died 10 times, came back, power-leveled and then TPK'd at the end of the mod. Great times man, great times.

Well, that's the beauty of NWN...with the toolset, you can easily create a mod or persistent world that is as difficult as you want it to be. You can even restrict just about any powergamer's exploit via scripting. The toolset is flat out awesome. You can do sooooo much with it.....

And I have a copy of the NWN2 toolset.....and I about had a major geekgasm when I toyed with it for the first time.

The server I ran and will try to setup again was run from work but open to my pals on the outside. The beauty of it was that it was server vault and myself and huds0n kept a close eye for potential cheating on it, which to my knowledge never occured. It was a boatload of fun running with the gang and I miss it. We will see how beefy a system is needed to run the server side of it and Ill see if I can come up with something. I would be tempted to make something similar to Aihrde but Ill have to see how proficient I will be with the new toolset before I commit to anything so grand.

I never did get into computer games. I like my rpg's with the presence of people physically in the room. Call me old fashioned.

There's been a lot of talk on the Dungeons and Dragons Online boards about the arrival of NWN 2 and I might have to check it out. I wasn't really into PC games when the first one came out, but I have been tempted to try it as it is only $20 now at Target. There have been a lot of bugs and a lot of downtime over the last few days in DDO (they just released a massive update), but I highly recommend that game if you're looking for a video game version of D&D. Yeah, it's 3.5 ruleset, but at least you don't have to do any of that math and rules deciphering yourself. I have some friends with whom I play, and it is truly a good dungeon crawl experience. It will never beat PnP, but easily being able to get five other friends together on a weeknight to play online is awesome! If any of you guys already play on there let me know. We're looking for one or two more to fill out our new party.

I could probably be talked into pulling out the giant pile of CDs, installing NWN again and maybe join you.

Good price.

But I have a question: Is there a way to play online more privately then? Either in a restricted zone/map/game or as a "LAN" game (over the internet), but with password access?

We could do this with Quake, HL and Unreal Tournament in FPS games. That way you can gather some friends and play and not have to deal with the greater internet community of experts, cheaters, hackers and just huge numbers of people.

A game with my fellow C&C'ers would be very interesting and fun, I'm sure!

Rhuvein,

I think it should be possible to have private sessions, even if I don't play much online myself. At least it was in NWN1. I pretty much just build modules. At least when I can, these days it's impossible for me.

I can't say for certain since I don't have NWN2 in my hot little hands yet, but with NWN1, you have several options:

1- You could play any one of a bazillion single player modules downloaded from the internet in addition to the included single player game.

2- You could either join a group of friends and play together in a downloaded module or host the module yourself and invite others to join you. These games can be password protected.

3- You could play in a PW (persistent world) that is open to any number of players (depending on the hosts' internet connection, some PW's have well over a hundred players on at any given time). These can be (and many are) password protected as well.

4- You could just build your own modules using the toolset and upload them to www.nwvault.com for others to play.

NWN is fantastic in that there are just so many ways to enjoy the game. I've played NWN since the day the original game hit the shelves - and I'm still enjoying it. I have no reason to believe that I'll enjoy NWN2 any less.

I have NWN Diamond Edition and I think it would be a blast to hook up with any of you in a "private" on-line game.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Yes, in HL, Quake, etc, fans made what they called "maps" which were essentiallly small complexes of rooms, stairs and various other structures in order to "deathmatch" or fight. Many fan maps were as good as maps in the original game!

That's it! Thats what I was hoping. Thank Ink. As mentioned above in many FPS games, fans created tons of excellent maps/modules and you could host private games.

That to me has the most appeal. Then you don't have to join huge frag fests that get boring after about 10 minutes.

And it's way more fun to do this with friends.

SOCOM (PS2) was the same way, somewhat boring when joining open rooms, but way hilarious when playing with friends in private rooms.

I would think the NWN2 has the same capabilities.

Well I failed to locate a copy yesterday so I cannot answer any questions about NWN 2 yet. Supposedly Best Buy will have it today. If they don't I will mutiny on them. Yes, I am taking my cutlass to best buy.

Yep, and that is for the Diamond Edition as well. If you guys are serious about play NWN 1 in a C&C group let me know. I will run down the street and pick up a copy. Actually, the "private play" with friends is one of the really cool things with DDO. All of the dungeons are instances, so when my friends and I go in the jerks get kept out. Plus there's not really any PvP in the game (there is now somewhat, but only on a limited mini-game basis) so there's no worrying about a South Park "Make Love Not Warcraft"-type scenario. You can play with PUG's and I have stumbled across a few idiots, and not-so-nice people, but most have been really nice. Plus the game is chock full of old school PnP'ers. Seriously, let me know about the NWN deal. Sounds like fun.

Alright, I'll be installing the original NWN and the expansions and then all the patches this evening...

Give me a few days to get back into the hang of it and then I'll be ready to join up.
