Post by Relaxo »

Does anyone have a list of the spells in the 3LBBs?
Not finding one on Google search

Thanks in advance!

Most of the OD&D spells are similar to those in C&C and/or the SRD so I assume it's not a problem to post this.

3 LBB = "Little Beige Books." Though some use "Little Brown Books." It refers to the original Dungeons & Dragons game, which is now often refered to as OD&D or 0e (more often than not by those familiar with the Old School Revival or OSR, but enough with the Acronyms!) But the quote below is a much more detailed explanation, and is taken from The Acaeum website (link-a-dink below quote)
Yes, the "granddaddy of them all". Published by Tactical Studies Rules, a fledgling company (at the time) of Gary Gygax, Don Kaye, and Brian Blume. The game is based on the fantasy portion of the earlier Chainmail rules, and also requires the Outdoor Survival war game (by Avalon Hill) to play.

Original D&D Set (woodgrain box) by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson
Original D&D Set (white box) by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson
Original D&D Set (white box, OCE) by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson

Contains three booklets (Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, Underworld & Wilderness Adventures) plus a Reference Sheets booklet. In addition, the Second and Third prints were bundled with a Correction Sheet.

The Reference Sheets booklet (actually, just loose pages stapled together), was exclusively available in the Original D&D Set. Nearly every set we've heard about has a booklet with varying pages, from 6 to 12; as far as we know, each printing has the same info, only differing in format and number of pages.

The rule set was further expanded upon with the five Original D&D Supplements. It was superseded in 1977 with the release of the D&D Basic Set (and to some extent, the Advanced D&D system).

Contrary to rumors, the Original D&D Set was *not* available at the 1973 Eastercon, nor were any "pre-publication" sets released. The set was first printed in late January 1974, and very likely was not publically available until the second quarter of 1974.

TheMetal1,

I've not seen LBB before. I'm very familiar with OD&D. Thank you for the explanation.

I still recall seeing it at a hobby shop while on vacation in Eureka Springs, Arkansas when I was about 8-10 years old. I may have been able to purchase it with my allowance money, but along side it was Eldritch Wizardry. That book put a stop to the purchase by my parents! It wasn't until I was 12 I got to play the D&D Basic set my friend got for Christmas. (Morale of the story is publishers should take into consideration what customers they may exclude with the more "racy" cover.)

LBB isn't usually associated with OD&D, but with Traveller (Little Black Books). Most of us at The Acaeum, if we don't pin down the printing, separate the versions by box type: woodgrain, white box, white box with starburst.

VERY SWEET! Thanks dude! I'm just comparing it to the list in the Swords and Wizardry White box. May I trouble you for the Cleric list?

Thanks again! you're a champion!

It should be pretty darned similar, since I wrote the WB rules set.

Here's the cleric list:

1st Level
Cure Light Wounds, Detect Evil, Detect Magic, Light, Purify Food & Water, Protection/Evil

2nd Level
Bless, Find Traps, Hold Person, Speak with Animals

3rd Level
Continual Light, Cure Disease, Locate Object, Remove Curse

4th Level
Create Water, Cure Serious Wounds, Neutralize Poison, Protection/Evil, 10'r. , Speak with plants, Turn sticks to snakes

5th Level
Commune, Create Food, Dispel Evil, Insect Plague, Raise Dead, Quest

I'm pretty sure all of these are common enough to be SRD open content and are in the C&C rules set (although sometimes the names change a little....)

OH! I didn't realize you were Marv Marv! (I guess it's obvious, glancing at your sig, duh) I love WB, which is what got me going on this inquiry.

SO now I can just ask you (though I think you've already answered it wiht the list) :: I compared it to LL and found 6 level 2 cleric spells in LL. so I became curious, was WB trimmed back for its own design decisions or were these 4 the ones in the LBBs?

Thanks again!

My plan was to duplicate the essentials of the LBB spell list in WB. I compressed a few (slow and haste became one spell, for example because I didn't see much point in two) to keep things a little different. Some liked the changes, others hated them.

I noted that, and loved it. I think there are very reasonable changes.
