It is good news. I love the film adaptions, and quite honestly, am looking forward to these Hobbit movies more than the Lord of the Rings films. With the Hobbit being broken up into two films, there is going to be more to the story than what is presented in the original book. Now, before you Tolienites go berating the PJ filming process, I would love to have more of the details filled in. More Smaug, more Battle of Five Armies and MORE GANDALF! Plus, we know that certain characters were certainly around, but played no part in the book. I'd love to see what Strider was doing, Prince Elf Boy and where the heck Gandalf went during the story!
This won't change the original, beloved book at all. That will still be around. But for the big screen, gimme MORE and if they make it just as good as the film version of LOTR, I'll be completely satisfied.
BRING IT ON!

If there is a place to put in Tom Bombadil, this is the opportunity. I can easily see a scene or two with the "gnomish bard." I don't care if its not from the book. His absence from the other movies was sorely felt as he's my favorite non-character.

I envision Keanu Reeves circa
Bill &Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Wait, that's Tim Benzedrine from
Bored of the Rings. My bad.

Looking forward to these films, I certainly enjoyed reading the Hobbit about 100X more than I did reading LOTR.

Ahmen!
I was very disappointed when he didn't get any screen time.

No word on Ian Holm, though. Like to see him in this.

Well they brought back Frodo for The Hobbit film(s), so it might be possible for Sir Iam Holm, though doubtful it seems.

Apparently Martin Freeman channels sir Ian Holm quite well. Peter Jackson said that this was the role Martin Free was born to play. Apparently his mannerisms and voice are dead on for Ian Holm.

Looking forward to this, I enjoyed the LotR trilogy and expect more of the same from the Hobbit movies.

Agreed. Even though Peter Jackson tweaked a few things that annoy the Tolkien purists, I think that overall he did a fantastic job with LOTR. I'm hoping that we get similar quality for the Hobbit.
Then ... maybe some Silmarillion action? (A guy can dream!)

Yup, they've put out open casting calls here in NZ for Orcs, Hobbits and Elves. From what I understand Wellington basically turned into Middle Earth during the filiming of the other 3, between this and world cup the next year or so ought to be pretty interesting here.
