Wilderlands Boxed set

Post by JediOre »

Is Troll Lord Games re-releasing this boxed set for C&C or will I need to purchase the d20 version Necromancer Games released?

Just curious (at this point).

Ah...no. Not that I am aware of. The only Judges Guild stuff being done for C&C is what James Mishler is writing via his own campaign version of various Judges Guild material.

The stats are minimal in the d20 version however. It's quite simple, in my estimation, to just run the numbers straight across to C&C encounters.

Besides, if you shop carefully/patiently I know of people getting them for $25.00.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I got it at GenCon for Grodog for $25.00 from one of the vendors. Another Necromancer board member bought it for about the same price in their LGS store clearance sale.

Thats what I mean by careful shopping.

At that price, I'd definitely buy it!

For $25.00 I'd certainly have to obtain another copy!!!

Back in the day, before WOHF was released, during the "you must buy, or lose out period" I actually obtained 3 copies to make sure I would get one. Having 3 copies was too much, so I sold a copy off to my FLGS. I talked up the store owner saying how awesome of a box set it was and how it pretty much compliled a ton of the older stuff into one definative box set, etc, etc. Luckily for me, the owner of the store bought the box set from me for $60.00 cash and ended up pitching the same spiel I gave him to an old-school gamer and reselling the box set for $80.00. The game was rebought about 12 hours later.

I found out months later that the guy that bought the WOHF box set had been out of RPG gaming for years, and the box set sparked him and his friends to get back into the hobby.

Just an interesting little story, I thought.

Yep, $25 would sell me on it too.

Though I'm pretty happy with the Players' Guide to the Wilderlands. I tend to like the barebones approach of the "teasers" for settings. Heck, even the little $2 Ptolus thingie was interesting.

One day I'll get to run a full campaign in the Wilderlands. And the Known Realms of Aereth. And....

Haha... *sighs* I hear you on that. SO many good ideas and motivations, so little time to develop them.

One campaign world. Erde the center. to the east is Greyhawk, to the west Aerith, to the south and attched to Aeriths land mass is the WIlderlands, on the other side of the world and continents of its own is FR.

To the North of Aerith is Blackmoor.

I'm working on it.

Mega-world, huh? Interesting idea. I myself have been trying to stuff Greyhawk and others into Aihrde, but I think your idea is better. Oh and don't forget about Barovia (unless you're one to utilize that "existing on another plane thing"!

Troll Lords is not republishing the boxed set, nor is Adventure Games Publishing.

The Wilderlands of High Fantasy boxed set from Necromancer Games will be the only place you will ever find all that information on the core Wilderlands in one place. So definitely buy it if you can still find it, at $25, $50, or even $75. It is well worth the retail price.

Adventure Games Publishing (my company) will be publishing a separate and distinct version of the Wilderlands, the Wilderlands of High Adventure, based on my own, personal Wilderlands campaign. We will also be publishing Wilderlands of High Fantasy products for use with the Necro version of Wilderlands of High Fantasy.

All of these products will be for Castles & Crusades, with free PDF conversion notes eventually made available for purchasers of the products through our website.

I'd be interested in seeing that map... I really, really like the Known Realms from Goodman Games. Excellent stuff. And, of course, I'm also a fan of Erde, Greyhawk, and Blackmoor. FR not so much, save for the 1E and early 2E materials.

How necessary will the boxed set be to running your adventures? Could you get by without it? Are the written assuming that you have the Boxed set? Does it reference the boxed set?

As far as it seems, the published Wilderlands of High Fantasy box set will be needed as the information that is within that box set will not be reprinted in the AGP products.

In other words, pick up the box set however you can (it's worth it anyways )

I suspect, know the way James thinks, that the modules he writes will be independent of the need to get the Necro Wilderlands products. All he is suggesting is that the Wilderlands set from Necro would be a good resource to have, but not vital.

Besides, with name changes and scale differences, the WoHF would be a good backdrop, but the "real meat" is the WoHA.

Several I have mentioned this to have requested maps as well. I'll see how well I can do.

For adventure modules, not necessary at all. The adventure modules I publish, whether set in WoHF or WoHA, will be stand-alones in that though they are set in the Wilderlands, they can be used in any campaign. Just as old timers placed the Caverns of Thracia and the Thieves of Fortress Badabaskor in their own campaign settings, so tii you will be able to place Demon Tongue Temple and Goblin Warrens of Ukrak Morfut in pretty much any campaign setting.

The sourcebooks, however, will vary. WoHA products will not require possession of the boxed set. WoHF products, however, may be much more useful if you have the boxed set, or they might not require the boxed set at all.

For example, the first product, Ravaged Ruins of the Roglaras, will consist of 50+ ruins designed to be used with the WoHF Campaign Map 5 (Classic Map 1): City State of the Invincible Overlord. While their use is maximized in the Wilderlands, and in relation to that specific map, the ruins can be used in any campaign with minimal changes. Simply change references to nearby WoHF towns or cities to your own towns and cities in your campaign, and things should work just fine.
