I think you've nailed that one! It's like when I watched Avatar and started thinking "say, I've seen this before..." and it took me a while to realize it was a retread of the Disney version of Pocahontas.

nah, it was Dances with Wolves! (but Pocahontas works too).finarvyn wrote:Just Jeff wrote:If they did, people would complain about them ripping of Three Musketeers.Sundog wrote:And with that in mind, why not drop all pretence and call it something different? I still say that it would be possible to market a steampunk movie without the "Musketeers" baggage. It might even be better, as it would be freed from expectations

I agree, good sir!finarvyn wrote:Off the top of my head, my biggest criteria for a movie like this (in order):
1. Is it well written?
2. Is it fun to watch?
3. Is it realistic/historical?
So as long as the thing is well done and fun, I can probably get over them not really following the books. Kind of like the new "Battlestar Galactica" which I think was great scifi and would have been a lot better with a new name.
Just my two cents.

I never actually saw Dances with Wolves, but it's nice to know that I already saw it twice (Avatar and Pocahontas) so I didn't miss much.Geleg wrote:nah, it was Dances with Wolves! That's the trick. If you sell it as Musketeers you get more potential sales from Musketeer fans but more potential complaints that it didn't follow the source material.Geleg wrote:I still say that it would be possible to market a steampunk movie without the "Musketeers" baggage. If you market it as something else you lose the Musketeer fanbase but get something that fewer people may like better.
Hard to say which is "better."

Re: Musketeers!
My wife and I saw it today and were entertained. For the record, it's an over-the-top remake of the 1973 movie and not nearly as punked as the trailer made it appear.
Ray Steveson was probably the stand out, making a delightful Porthos.

Good to hear. It's on my "must see" list at the moment. (I would go today, but our local theatre is hosting "The Exorcist" and Linda Blair is supposed to be there. I couldn't pass that up, so maybe I get Musketeers next weekend.)

Did you go to the Boulevard, or the Palms? I got to meet Cammie King (Bonnie Blue in Gone with the Wind) and Steve Bogart (son of Humphrey and Bacall) at the Boulevard. Good place.finarvyn wrote:Good to hear. It's on my "must see" list at the moment. (I would go today, but our local theatre is hosting "The Exorcist" and Linda Blair is supposed to be there. Hollywood Boulevard in Downers Grove. (I think it's DG there. Maybe Woodridge.) It's a nice place, if you like that kind of thing.

Re: Musketeers!
I finally found the time for Musketeers. The family was out shopping for "Black Thursday" and I had some "me time."
Sadly, the movie is no longer at any of the local theatres.
I guess that says something. It must have been pretty bad and I probably saved myself $10 plus popcorn costs.

Re: Musketeers!
Even if it has nothing to do with the book, I know we'll have to see the new Musketeers. Have seen all the sound versions, and I even liked the 1939 version (with Ameche and the Ritz Brothers) which was actually closer to the book than the Disney version.
