He paved the way for programs such as Java, which runs MapTool. Thank you Mr. Ritchie. :(

Thanks for posting. Great article.

I came into computers at the tail end of the early years. The picture brings back great memories of the humming, cold and brightly lit computer rooms!

1982 - COBOL and Fortran on CDC mainframes.

1983 IBM 370s.

1984 The first water cooled IBM mainframe computer (can't recall the number).

I learned C/C++ in 1992 (client/server) and used/programmed on mainframe UNIX in 1994.

Ran SCO UNIX on client/server in 1996, but left programming for systems analysis work and eventually helpdesk management.

Love these articles about the pioneers/innovators of computers.

I learned C using Kernighan & Ritchie's The C Programming Language in the mid '80s. On Unix, of course, so a double Ritchie whammy.
