"Thorin is described as being very haughty, stern, and officious. He has a talent for singing and playing the harp, wears a gold chain, and has a very long beard. His appearance is also characterized by his distinct sky blue hood."

Date of Birth: 2746 of the Third Age

Thorin was around 195 years old during The Hobbit. For comparison, the other dwarves were:

Balin: 178
Dwalin: 169
Fili: 82
Kili: 77
Oin: 167
Gloin: 158

The other dwarves have no date of birth listed that I can find. So, it appears that Thorin was one of the oldest, if not the senior member.

By comparison, Gimli was 139 during LotR.

So, in other words, Jackson got Thorin wrong, appearance-wise. /mutter

I'm sure The Hobbit will still be excellent, however. ;) LotR trilogy are among my very favorite movies of all time, so my expectations for The Hobbit (allowing for some "artistic license") is very high.

Now that I compare the Gowron and Thorin pics, maybe not that close. I would have gone older with Thorin myself. One little interesting bit of information(can't remember where I read it and I hope I'm right)was that Sylvester McCoy(Doctor Who #7 1987-89)was considered for Bilbo in the LOTR films, but is definitely playing Radagast the Brown. Seems Gandalf only mentioned RtB to Beorn, but I'm sure they'll do something cool with it. Very cool for one of my old Doc Who guys to be in this high profile production.

Finally watched the trailer. Not too bad. Still mixed on the Dwarves. Several have that Gimliesque proper dwarf look(or close enough), some do not. Thorin looks too human, too tall, and too young. Maybe Kili was too human, as well. A few others(Nori)didn't quite measure up. I realize they have to give each dwarf a unique look, but it seems a bit all over the place in the racial facial appearance department. I guess we all have our preferences based on years of LOTR art, cartoons, fantasy gaming, and the like. I'm promise I'm not one of the Jackson LOTR Hobbit bashers. There were things I didn't like in the trilogy, but Jackson(IMO)did a pretty fair job of pleasing this Tolkien fanboy, as well as the general public who may not give a damn about the books. BTW, I could have sworn I saw a "Tim the Magician" dwarf.

I still think they made Thorin more human and youngish and 'normal' looking because he's one of the or the main 'leading man' and they want him to be 'relate-able' and not too far from handsome so the female humans will buy tickets.... Probably not so much wrong as a design decision based on marketing realities.
That said, I still think most of them have too-short beards for my typical dwarf image... but these are minor details, I"m sure the movie will be at least very good.

You're probably halfway right, Relaxo. I bet that's a huge factor with the new Doctor Who. Probably why we'll never see a doctor much older than early 40's. 50+ is right out unfortunately. I digress...
