So my real name is Malco and I live in Italy. I began to play rpg in 83 or 84 (I dont remember perhaps later) when the red box of the mentzer edition came out in Italy. At that age (10 or 11) my english was poorer than now, but with my friends we tried to translate the turquoise manual, the black (companion and master, then professional translated in Italian some years later by EG) and the golden Immortal (never translated into italian). Since then I have never stopped to play rpg: fantasy (whfrp, T&T, a little free german rpg called Dungeon slayers, very nice if you want to do some hack and slash), horror (CoC and the astounding Dead lands, one of my favorite of all times) and science fiction (rift) and then I don't remember. One thing is sure: when I came acrosse the (in)famous D&D 3ed I was disgusted: one good things was that the rules were well explained, but there were too many! I don't care how many hairs one hobgoblin has on his booty!
Then for the first time I came across C&C (I think 4 years ago) and I must admit I get it from the mule: at the first glance I rejected it like a sort of 3e simplified.
But my needs were not satisfied: I began play Dungeon slayers and then T&T but the ghost of D&D was haunting my mind! I realized that I tend to do house rules to make these games (that are very good and Ken, the creator of C&C, is a nice person) resemble to D&D.
So I began to study (this is the word) AD&D 1e: after have spent months reading threads on dragonfoot, I gave up. There were things that always will be misteries: initiative, weapon speed factors, surprise ecc In my delirium I have read all the Q&A with Gary and from that at least I have understood well a thing: casting times and segment in combat.
But at this point, I was from my start. I wanted a game with simple rules with those all funny things of the mentzer edition such as initiative morale surprise etc. I stumbled across Hackmaster but after a quick view I realized that this game was too much complex for me.
So again I was wander in the web seeking for a game that fits to my needs. I read a review: in this review the writer named the 3 games that are getting the inheritance of D&D (Hackmaster, C&C and Dungeon crawl classic, perhaps). The author tended toward hackmaster, but the words he used for C&C were "simple" and "good".
I went to rpgnow and I have purchased the player handbook: I have read it and my thought was "this game is cool! and it's simple too! and it resembles a lot to AD&D 1e". I have no words to say how much this product is a good thing. I say only this: my eternal GF (we are not married) likes it too (she quite dislikes all the other fantasy rpg except d&d)
Since then I have bought M&T, character sheets, CKscreen, CKG, the huge map of aihrde and I think I am not going to stop soon.
Perhaps the age of heroes is returned! Very soon I will master my first session: I hope next week.
Thanks (and soon I will post my house rules!!!)
bye
