To a certain extent D&D has been and always was modular. I haven't played D&D4e to know just how modular if at all it is. But certain 2e with it's 'Kits' concept, 1e with Unearthed Arcana, along with a bunch of 3rd Party Supplements - Rolemaster, Role-Aids, etc. and OD&D with each of the Supplements after the LBB.
Your absolutely right, and as Arduin pointed out, that's something they got away from. From my understanding, it is something they are possibly trying to achieve again.

DeadReborn wrote:I'm curious as to what 5e is going to be like, but in all honesty, I don't see what they could possibly create that would get me to buy it. My two all time favorites are 2e and, in recent time, C&C. With C&C being set up the way it is, I can easily incorporate the stuff I love about 2e into C&C without a hitch. Even if 5e is capable of doing this, I already own 2e and C&C. I seriously doubt there will be anything "new" or "ground breaking" enough to get me to buy.
I read reports of Monte Cook running a 1e module (I think it was 1e) with the new rules, but, again that's something I can already do.
All true, but a big selling point for a D&D game that actually did all of the above would be the available player base--right now it is hard to find anyone who wants to play anything except Pathfinder. A new D&D might increase the number of potential players.
All speculation right now, though! They still have to demonstrate that they can make a game that I will enjoy playing.

You mean you used the rules?

Well, tried to. After I returned from the sanitarium I threw the books in the trash.

There, done, write 5e on it and move on!
I'll definitely pay a visit to my FLGS in April and see what this thing looks like.

Cool!
"Your purchase of this monumental book helps support the Gygax Memorial Fund—established to immortalize the “Father of Roleplaying Games” with a memorial statue in Lake Geneva, WI."
I'll try to give my FLGS a call this weekend and see if I can get in on that.

Wow. I have the late 70's AD&D cores signed by Gary and Dave, but these would be tempting. Can't afford hardly anything these days. Hope folks won't mind if I present a hypothetical scenario as it relates to the future of D&D. Just talking, not espousing hardcore beliefs here. For better or worse, here it goes......
Remember when Gary Gygax was putting out product through TLG? Stupid question. We all do. Since Gary's death, Castle Zagyg has been in limbo when it was supposed to go onto bigger and better things. As far as I know, it's all still in limbo. I'm just a fanboy, but have always theorized that maybe the hope was to make more money from Gary's offerings, or to find a larger audience. I don't know all of the industry figures, but wouldn't that be Paizo or WOTC? With D&D's possible return to its roots, could they even consider brokering a deal to bring the Gygax name back to the fold? For example the return of Gary Gygax's Greyhawk! I'm just rambling this morning. No disrespect intended to the Gygax clan. Any thoughts?

All I know is it has been very tough to find any of the Zagyg stuff for under $100 US or so, even used.
After using some serious google-fu, I found a NEW copy of "Yggsburgh: Castle Zagyg Vol. I" for a sweet price.
I jumped on it but I have not even taken it out of the plastic.
I would suggest that TLG cut a deal with the EGG estate (perhaps with a few bucks per purchase going to the "Gygax Memorial Fund") to re-release all of the Zagyg stuff they have and let us get in on the goodness.
Then again, I do not know anything about running a gaming company or "for-profit publishing" so my mouth may be writing checks the Troll's @$$es can't cash...

I think that's a great idea. If done as an e-publish product, a great % of the price could be given as there would be no printing & channel costs.

Well, if you pop over the Gygax Memorial Fund, it looks like there is a tweet from Gail saying the following:
"Ok brace yourself. There will some interesting news soon! All to the memory of my dear late husband, E. Gary Gygax"
That was 60 days ago. The Gygax Games page is still active, but no change - just the blurb:
"The Gygax Games Website has been temporarly removed. Hang tight folks we have something good in the works!"
Again Speculation on my part, but This announcement about the AD&D Books and how it helps out the memorial fund might be just that "interesting news" she was refering too.
As far as Castle Zagyg, I'd love to see it as a C&C product, you know finish what was started and all that. But I'd be just as pleased to see it as a series of Castle Greyhawk box sets from WOTC. Perhaps we will see Greyhawk return with 5th edition.

The real news?
WotC is reprinting AD&D.

This is the "solicitation" document on their website.

Sorry for replication. Just jumped to the last post in the thread without reading page 5.

I was pondering this, as it looks like new cover art and all that...but maybe it is just for the print run for the Gygax Memorial. Afterwards, we'll see a release with this cover for use with 5e...

Maybe the big news is just the limited release of the old core books. Then again, maybe bigger things are around the corner. Not sure a new Gygax Greyhawk would make me play the latest edition, but I'd buy it for source material IF they could assure me that it pretty much mirrors Gary's. Notes, writings, etc. This is all speculation, but could WOTC need the biggest name in gaming just in time for a 5th edition? Who's to say. On the topic of an e-book fundraiser release of Zagyg, I'd say doubtful. Only because i seem to recall being told that Gary didn't want there to be a PDF of Castle Zagyg UW. I don't believe there was a legal digital version of Yggsburgh, despite there being pdf's of the town expansions. As for collectors prices, I think Yggsburgh can be found at an affordable price. UA is another matter. I wish there was a PDF.

True, but someone else is!

Wow! Cool. Can't believe that they were able to pry the I.P. rights out of WotC for these.

They did not. Its not an officially licensed model. Its an artistic interpretation... just a very good and close one.
