Savage Worlds is my main game for most everything. It's not perfect, but it does what I want a "generic" RPG to do better than anything else I've found so far (though I'm always looking ...). I've used it for lots of different genres and settings, and rarely found it to be insufficient.

Having said that, I still like the old TSR Marvel Superheroes RPG. It's not that I think SW can't handle supers, but the Marvel game is great, I know how to play it, and I have a bunch of the source books and adventures, so I don't feel any great need to use SW when I need a supers fix.

I'm curious about FATE, and have some PDFs, but I haven't actually played it (or even read it very carefully).

That's about it.

My favorite non-fantasy RPGs:

GURPS
(new) World of Darkness
Star Wars Saga (and RCR)
Sidewinder (d20 Modern western)
Marvel Superheroes (TSR)
Gangbusters (never played, but love the era and the rules aren't too terrible)
Traveller
LD's C&C creations - CL Checker, a witch class, the half-ogre, skills, and 0-level rules

Definitely Call of Cthulhu. Although I have never played, just GMed.

I've always found Blacksburg Tactical Research Center; EABA system, very solid as a generic system, plus it has some really cool ideas for settings.

For a "rules light" system it can get very crunchy depending on which game you buy, (Starblazers and Diaspora to name two.)

As far as playing it, your players need to know as much as they can, of the rules, and have a very open (and creative) mind on the level of the GM to play.
