My wife has ruined my Christmas.

Post by Treebore »

I probably shouldn't post this, but I really, really, really need to vent.

My wife was buying al our Christmas presents for our kids, family, and friends. She was using the internet to find the best prices, etc... saving us a lot of money.

Until...

She kept paying for everything out of the same bank account. She knows we have two. She knows the one she was using is the one I pay our bills out of.

Anyways, to put it simply, she spent way too much out of this account. To the point where with JUST the bank, I have nearly $500.00 in NSF overdraft fees. JUST THE FEES!!!!! Not what we owe to the various retailors, not their additional bounce fees, JUST MY BANKS FEES!!!!

The other account? The one she didin't use? Well, it will soon be empty to cover, I hope, everything she screwed up. Merry F'ing Christmas, right?

$500!? For how many transactions? Over here, our banks' greed is getting to the point of indecency. More than half their profits now come from (lack of...) administration fees. They don't even need to invest our money to be profitable anymore. Some of them charge up to 20$ (CAD) per month to administrate a regular account unless a minimum amount of 5000$ is kept in it at all times...it's insane...

Sorry for your loss...

$20 per month?

Get thee to a Credit Union. (If thee have those available...)

There are no fees for our CU Accounts and ANY Credit Union we draw money out of ATMs from does not charge us for the service, unlike those friggin' evil banks that smack us for close to $3 just to take out some money.

She bounced to 17 merchants at $29.00 (US) each, almost $500.00 (US)

And she doesn't understand why I am all upset.

I feel your pain, I've had that problem. (well, actually I've caused that problem, but we won't get into that ) What works wonders is having a good bank (like I have now) that either lets you specify accounts to be linked, so if you overdraw one account it just bleeds in from the other, or to set up a line of credit for that purpose. Absolutely nothing is more horrible than giving lots of money to the bank for stupidity reasons alone. You also might want to try talking to the bank, I once talked my old bank into forgiving half of my overdraft fees (It was a smallish country bank) just by saying, "hey I do all of my business here, have done for a good few years, I made a mistake, and the fees stacked up before I could correct it" They might say no but it is worth a shot.

Really? I made a $5000 clean profit and cleared all my debt.

I feel your pain!!!!

One time my wife ran up over a $1,000.00 phone bill!! WOW!! That made me HOT!! Now, of course, it is just a joke. I chalked it up to one of the 'or worse' things.

Capital Idea! I would be prepared to put your money where your mouth is, however. If they do not do it, take your business elsewhere. Do not threaten them with that. Make sure you are talking with the decision maker, not someone who will have to go to someone else to ask permission.

They will work with you to reduce the fees. If they do not, they do not care for you nor your business.

You're lucky you're not in jail, to be honest. Numerous bounced checks are a hefty heave-ho into the judicial system... and its not one that's easy to wriggle free of, especially if you can cover them.

I'm sorry to hear this news. Make sure she gets a whack upside the backside with a coal-laden stocking. *doesn't mean to inflict injury....*

That's profoundly depressing, Tree. I'm very sorry for you and your family.

It's too bad that financial institutions don't have the words "honest mistake" in their vocabulary. Your family should not be penalized for a mistake of this kind. It's not as if you didn't have the money and were trying to avoid payment.

What kills me is all my wife had to do is come to me and say, "I need to pay these retailors, which account should I use?" I would have told her and none of this would have happened. But since she has nothing to do with taking care of our money, she just assumed she knew what money was where, and spent by what she thought.

Is it OK to see only colors?

Cool! Thanks! I am hoping to have enough "change" left over to place a Santa Grab Bag order, so this will definitely help me be able to.

See, I'm blessed by the fact that I'm the dumb one when it comes to financial stuff--Mrs. Quick is the genius.

And she buys the presents and pays the bills. I just earn the money (or about 70% of it).

Very sorry to hear this, Treebore. It's a real bummer, especially during the holiday season. Best wishes to you and your family on a speedy financial recovery.

My wife managed to build up around $20,000 in debt to credit cards. We'll finish paying it off at the end of this year. So it could be worse - and it is manageable, though not easy.

Sorry to hear this, Tree. Hopefully you can get the bank to work with you on this.

Between my properties, credit card debt, and other miscellaneous debts I am carrying in excess of $375,000 (US) of debt. About 20 to 25,000 of it is CC debt. Before I sold my house in SC last month you could have added another 101 K to that.

I'm poor because I am so friggin in debt! Otherwise I have good income. The debt looks to be going down more, though.

I should be selling two more of my properties if the person buying crosses the finish line on the deal in a few weeks. That will lower my debt by about another $110,000.

Then hopefully by April I will have about another $40,000.00 of my debt gone. Maybe substantially more than that, depending on how good or bad my auctions in Phoenix go. Which got moved back from this month to next month.
Maybe then I will be able to afford my wifes spending habits for a while after that.

If her spending increases along with how much more money we have, then I will start thinking about divorce. Quickly.

Just as an FYI, we had to sell off over $1200.00 from our stock portfolio, but we got everything covered. Most importantly the kids had the great Christmas I/we promised them. Hopefully I'll have the same next year.
