I've kept half an eye on the "Adventures Dark and Deep" and the "A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore" out of curiosity. Its kind of a retro clone "what if" project. Its an attempt to reverse engineer a likely best guess of what Gygax's 2e would have looked like based on things he has said in articles and whatnot from late in his TSR career at what he wanted to see changed/altered from 2e.
"A Curious Volume of Forgotten Lore" is kind of a supplement book for 1e style games that boot-straps on some of their changes.
Has anybody been following this closer than me? Ive been a hair curious to pick up the volume of forgotten lore but im not really sure how easily it could be adapted to C&C or how much of it actually would just duplicate things already present in C&C.

I wasn't even aware of it until now.

While I am not interested in another retro-style 1E clone (Adventures Dark & Deep), the 'what if' intrigued me enough to back the project when it was first launched on Kickstarter.
I reviewed the product here on my blog:

Now that said, since my original assessment, I have found out that it is a POD effort after all. This makes me somewhat disgruntled given that I paid $30 for the softback (plus shipping) when now anyone can grab it for $20. I'd be really pissed if I pledged the hardback for $60 only to find out that I could get one now for $30.
It's a neat book if you can forgive it's minor little faults but hardly necessary if you've got other resources on hand (like the CKG for instance). If you're simply curious, you may consider just the PDF for $10.

I have seen and read many, many "what ifs" and most of them are fairly decent, but I find I never quite like it and sometimes I'll even say "wow, I like that" or even "where did that idea come from?" and then discover EGG had written about it offhand one three million periods ago.

Ugh, that's lame about the KS funding. I did Kick in for the pdf, and it's interesting. The classes struck me as all rougish. I say this without re-reading it since April. But I found it interesting.
