[LTTP] Minecraft

Well after my ill-fated attempts at trying to play Godus, I finally "researched" Minecraft, as it has intrigued me for years. It always seemed my type of game that had elements of not being my type of game. Simply put I dig the whole "sandbox" idea with the ability to be creative but the first person shooter thing has always been a bore to me. I know there are different levels of game play with "Creative" being one of them, but in the end the thought of "living" in a world rather than "existing" in a world drew more appeal, so I've opted for the "Survival" mode. This has caused problems right from the start because I'm a total spaz and have a hard time just moving my character around. Plus info for crafting a workbench/craft table, that I acquired, seemed to be out of date and it took me awhile to figure it out.

Suffice to say I did not survive the first night and got killed 3 times before getting used to the whole movement/action things (Which I'm still working on.)

I don't think my spawned world is helping out as it seems to be the edge of a desert with low trees, hills and not mountains. The biggest killer, the ground just collapses, underneath me (Or, close by) for no reason (I don't dig or anything.) It had trapped me once already in my first hiding attempt. Everything went black and I thought my game was f'ed-up until I just started to randomly dig, in a straight line, and finally got out.

There also doesn't seem to be a lot of minerals to mine (Though it is early days) which is definitely the worst case scenario for a beginner. I know I can create a new world and hope for something better, but I want to soldier on and try my best with this world.

I did survive my first night by standing on the tallest hill surrounded by tall grass. Though the section just behind me collapsed and almost threw me down into a pit.

Getting lost has been pretty easy to do. It'll take me awhile to get my surroundings down and I know I'm going to have to get better in many areas of game play before going on an underworld adventure.

So, because of my difficulties with moving/acting and lack of instant knowledge of crafting everything I do is slow and the days are just not long enough, though I am slowly getting better.

I did watch some Minecraft tutorials on YouTube and they help, but watching what you're suppose to do being doing, by an expert, and implementing those same techniques with beginner hands are two totally different worlds.

Even though I've been an abject failure this early on I can easily see the appeal and unlike PvP first person shooters I'm not dying ever 5 seconds and get bored with the game 2 minutes in. It's going to be a slow crawl to respectability but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

My son and daughter really love Minecraft. They play mostly in creative mode, creating vast castles and homes with their friends. I look at the world vistas and camera shots of the terrain and structures and it is wonderful. Of course I think it would be a great way to visualize gaming areas.

To that end, I have been trying to talk my son into creating the canyon with curtain wall from Stonehell. Stonehell is going to be my next C&C campaign when Stonehell 2 comes out.

I have thought about trying to get him to create the Caves of Choas in it too.

Awesome game, Minecraft! If I had not swore off video games for pen and paper games, board games, etc. I would give it a try myself!
