Incomplete bestiary
Incomplete bestiary
Even with my many years of gaming, I have yet to encounter certain iconic monsters.
Those with which I have not yet crossed swords:
Goblins
Orcs
Hobgoblins
Beholders (until recently)
Gnolls
Dryads
Just to name a few. What iconic baddies have you missed?

I don't recall as a player, but I know as a DM/GM/CK I have used damn near every monster.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Re: Incomplete bestiary
As a player, I've run into dang near everything not underwater dwelling in the AD&D 1st ed MM (except about half of the devils and demons I think) and a fair number of critters from the follow up monster manuals. That doesn't count home brew critters, those published in Dragon, or the Polyhedron from the RPGA. As a DM, I've thrown about half that back at the players.

I've bumped into most of the low HD monsters from the 1E monster manual, but I have massive gaps in my experience with the higher end baddies.

Re: Incomplete bestiary
As a CK, I think I have put most of the standard Monster Manual type baddies up against players over the years. With the release of of Necromancer Games or Frog God Games Tome of Horrors Complete, Tome of Horrors 4, and S&W's Monstrosities creature books, I have had a hard time including everything from those sources into my games. Between those last 3 books, that is near 1500 pages of baddies! One of the problems is that some monsters are just not going to fit in my personal games. Kyrin? Though I have encountered one in a recent GH game, I have NEVER had the need for something like that in my game. Modrons? Nope. Not going to happen.

I've ran a fair number of high level games, so going to other planes such as the hells, the Abyss, etc... have occurred. So I have even ran Slaadi, Modrons, and a whole lot more. But yeah, I am talking in reference to the original 1E AD&D monster books, MM, MM2, and Fiend Folio. Get beyond thsoe and you have thousands of options, so it would take far more serious gaming than I have done to put a dent into all those possibilities.

Re: Incomplete bestiary
My first module was B2 Keep on the Borderlands, so I had a good introduction to most of the standard humanoid monsters right away. I never did run into a beholder or mind flayer, though (possibly the most iconic of the early AD&D monsters), and run-ins with demons and devils were minimal and of the lowest variety.jdizzy001 wrote:Even with my many years of gaming, I have yet to encounter certain iconic monsters.

Re: Incomplete bestiary
The games in which I participated usually started at higher levels so we almost never saw the low hd guys, but baddies from different planes were abundant. I've even bumped heads with cthulu.
As a ck, I am very fond of classic baddies so in my games orcs and goblins abound (i have been known to reskin a higher hd baddy to accommodate my preference for classic monsters).

In my years as a game master, I haven't used aquatic monsters much at all. They players just don't go that direction. I've sent them out into the water a few times, and they've had to deal with some underwater humanoid menace (that were boarding the ship from all sides) but other than that, nothing. I wouldn't mind doing some more of those. Other than that, I've covered the gamut of different environments and the monstrous encounters that go with them.

When it comes to water, i've never had to throw aquatic baddies at my pc's, the task of swimming is usually an encounter all its own. The water is a dangerous place
