Ya, they had it on the Chaosium site for a while before that. It looks like they've made more significant changes to the rules than they have with any other edition. I'm not sure the fans at the forums are too thrilled about it so far.

Yeah, I bet people who read the C&C forums think we aren't happy with it too.

:) I haven't actually played it before, though I've been cozying up to the BRP Big Gold Book for quite a while. I think if I ever do run something in the horror genre, I'll just stick with that anyway.

I've only played Cthulhu, never ran it myself. Only "horror" game I ever ran was a year long Ravenloft game set in the 3E version of the setting. I do have the general D100 system book that the Cthulhu RPG uses, or should say is based upon the system used by Cthulhu, but I haven't used that yet either.

I'm sad that they decided to make such radical changes. CoC has been essentially unchanged from its inception through 6E and has worked out great, then they decide to suddenly change things.

Reminds me of T&T, which was compatible from the start through 5.5E and then with their 7E release became a different thing. Kinds of drives a wedge in between the old timers and the new timers. You'd think that companies would have learned something from D&D's "edition wars" which has so fragmented their market that it's insane.

Anyway, I'm lookinig at CoC 7E but all of the stuff on my shelf is 5E compatible and I probably won't switch over.

There was some discussion about the changes in regards to backwards compatibility over on RPGGeek (link). The only real changes were to attributes and then only to go to a percentile. Skill percentages are figured out beforehand, which eliminates the resistance table. Getting the pre-7th attributes involves nothing more than dividing the score by 5. Things that don't appear in your edition of Call of Cthulhu (in my case, 5.6) can be safely ignored.

7th Edition adventures can be used with pre-7th Edition rulesets without too much difficulty. As noted in the second post of the aforementioned thread, it's easy, but not as plug and play as before.

I've been a CoC fan for 25 years, and so far I like the changes in 7th edition. I haven't had a chance to actually play it, but I like the "push" rules and the death of the infamous resistance table. I also like the fact that players now "build" a character that they wanna play. As for backwards compability I don't see any problems at all. I think I could easily run any older edition module, by merely "winging" it. Once the new edition is out I'm gonna get the books and run a game!

If your willing to do it online I have a Thursday night group that would be willing to give it a try. 9 to 12 PM Eastern. The group is all about trying out a new game roughly every 9th session, but we are flexible on that, as long as we are having fun.

Sounds like fun! Thanks for the invitation, but I'll be playing between 3.00 - 6.00 AM (western European time), so I'll pass!
