Forum Enhancement - Strikethrough Code Request
Forum Enhancement - Strikethrough Code Request
On some sites I frequent, it is possible to simply cross out text rather than deleting it by applying BBCode around it. For example, [strikeout]This text needs to be crossed out.[/strikeout] would produce "This text needs to be crossed out." with a line through it. This has applications for bullet lists such as my errata list for the 5th printing. It also has applications for when a snippet of text is no longer accurate. Rather than rewriting the entire post to have it make sense, one could simply cross out the inaccurate text.
I don't know about the rest of the gang here, but while editing my posts to fix a spelling or grammar error is one thing I really don't like deleting entire sentences or paragraphs wholesale, no matter how wrong the offending material may be. Thus, I believe adding a or [strike][/strike] code to the BBCode list would be useful. An example case is my errata list for the 5th printing. After Steve clarified the illusionist's disguise ability was never supposed to be as good as the rogue version I wanted to cross out the offending text rather than simply deleting it.

This would be a better solution from an Editor's hat viewpoint...

If you really want the Trolls to see and possibly act on this send Tim and e-mail.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

@Arduin: In my case it's a matter of honor and integrity. My words, right or wrong, should be there for all to see. I wrote them and should be required to stand by them. The strikethrough allows for that while also acknowledging to others that the struck material was in fact wrong. Honestly, if I had my way there would be a limited window for edits and deletions. But such a move would be excessively unpopular as not everyone treats their posts as I do.
@Treebore: I want to gauge reactions before I do that. Perhaps I should have set up a poll, but I'd prefer to see replies from everyone.

I noticed it wasn't a limited time on edits. I thought that was unusual. I've done edits of long time posts if I see a misspell or grammatical error only, as that doesn't change the substance of the post.

Re: Forum Enhancement - Strikethrough Code Request
I checked the board settings and BBCode is enabled. That's the only toggle I can see. There's nothing I found that would specifically stop strikethrough.
Unless it was disabled before, and someone changed it without updating this thread.

I can't get the normal strikethrough tags to work, though. Hmm. Possible bug in the phpBB version?

Re: Forum Enhancement - Strikethrough Code Request
I think I added it successfully.
Lemme test
There's a button in the full editor, and the tag works.
There are a bunch of other options that can be added, too. Browse here:

The horizontal line is probably the most useful of the bunch. With that bbcode it's possible to combine multiple replies to different users in the same post, keep them all separate, and keep them readable.Fiffergrund wrote:I think I added it successfully.

A software forum I frequent has the ability to call out users by typing @ in front of their username. For example, if I type @Fiffergrund in a post, you'd get a PM saying that you were called out, with a link to the post so you could reply. It's not bbcode however. More likely is that it's a forum mod.
The code passes.

I don't always check here everyday, so a call out feature would be nice. It's something to think about.

I might be able to do a spoiler tag. I'll look around to see if there's something that can be easily plugged in.
