So this past week, much to my surprise, I noticed that Fantasy Grounds II was now on Steam. My face to face gaming group is getting ready to have several members move out of the area for work and we'd like to continue with FGII being one of our options.
I'm an Ultimate License holder which means none of the players that connect to my game need to purchase FGII, the just need the free version. Roll20 was in the back of mind as an option, as was simply Google+ with an online whiteboard. Pretty much a FGII no-brainer, I have the C&C ruleset for it and just picked up the CKG on sale so we decided to give it a try. I was just annoyed I didn't have full functionality (kept getting run-time errors on certain links - class abilities - in both the CKG and PHB). I posted to the steam community to try and sort it out, but hadn't heard anything before I started the game.
Anyway, this past Friday we all met up at my house to game and had two other players (both new to the game) join us on Google+ for voip/video. From there everyone got the demo version from Steam and linked into the game. FGII works great when it's working, but can be a pain to figure out if its not. Port Forward and linking in was easy for everyone, but my ruleset was out of date and I couldn't get links to work in the ruleset. Turns out I had an old version of the C&C ruleset, with it being on sale for $7.50 I figure I just buy it again, but still didn't do the trick. As frustrating as that was, the entire group thought the VTT was awesome.
Characters were transferred from our Face to Face C&C Game and new characters created for the new player. We ran through a couple of same combats and role-play encounters so everyone could get used to the system. Having most everyone set up face to face or be able to screen share to show the guys that were online was a huge help. Everyone's on-board for the most part to continue gaming this way.
The Good news is I figured out the problem and was resolved the issue with the help of some forum posters on steam. (Once I removed my old copy of the game everything worked - go figure, pretty simple fix). The latest C&C version is awesome, especially compared to when I last used it. All kinds of new features, and having the CKG is great boon especially with all the tables a click away.
We're likely just going to try a few more face to face games with our Laptops. Don't get me wrong, I love using the Books, Character, Sheets, Paizo Pawns, Flipmaps, map packs, rolling dice, and all that. The VTT saves me tons of time for setting up tearing down and I don't have to search through a book to find a rule. I just click in the ruleset. Even better is all the C&C Modules/Adventures already created to use for FGII. We're doing A1 - Assault on Blacktooth Ridge and everything is right there on the desktop organized and ready to go.
Anyway, if you're on the fence for a VTT or interested in checking it out, I think FGII is the way to go especially for C&C Gamers.
C&C for Fantasy Grounds II on Steam
Re: C&C for Fantasy Grounds II on Steam
I've been wanting to do an FG II Ultimate License, but my backwoods country bumpkin ISP effectively has me behind TWO firewalls, so I have yet to figure out how to do port forwarding through that, so I stick with Roll 20 until I learn how to use Himachi or some other similar program to get through it.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Make sure you do an update to get the latest ruleset; it works fine with the CKG & PHB links.TheMetal1 wrote:I was just annoyed I didn't have full functionality (kept getting run-time errors on certain links - class abilities - in both the CKG and PHB).

Already done. Working awesome now. Everyone's character sheet is fully linked set up. Huge improvement.mmbutter wrote:Make sure you do an update to get the latest ruleset; it works fine with the CKG & PHB links.TheMetal1 wrote:I was just annoyed I didn't have full functionality (kept getting run-time errors on certain links - class abilities - in both the CKG and PHB).
Though I would love to see it auto add Race and Class automatically input all the "Stuff" by simply dragging and dropping into the Character sheets at some point.

I've ran into the port forwarding issue a few times. I had a heck of time trying to figure it out when I got started.Treebore wrote:I've been wanting to do an FG II Ultimate License, but my backwoods country bumpkin ISP effectively has me behind TWO firewalls, so I have yet to figure out how to do port forwarding through that, so I stick with Roll 20 until I learn how to use Himachi or some other similar program to get through it.
Recommend that you just call your ISP and have them help you directly set up the Port Forward with you. That's the only way I've been able to get it to work. Took about 10 to 20 minute phone call but once it's set up at the house you won't have a problem.

I did. I knew more about Port Forwarding from what I read on the internet than what the Tech was able to tell me, which is why I am looking into programs that can help me get it done, such as Himachi.TheMetal1 wrote:I've ran into the port forwarding issue a few times. Re: C&C for Fantasy Grounds II on Steam
The first time I tried to set it up I was shifted like three times from Tech to Tech pushed up the chain to a level 3 Tech (no idea what that was, but he fixed it).Treebore wrote: I did. No idea what Himachi is, but hope it works!
What also might help is ddavidson the lead over at FGII offered to help someone set up their port forward stuff on Steam. He might be willing to do the same for you.
Re: C&C for Fantasy Grounds II on Steam
Unfortunately I not only live in a small town, but a very small County, population wise, so my service only has the one level of "tech" available. If Himachi doesn't work for me, I will try and get in touch with Davidson. Since it works for my son, and the games he uses it for, I am very hopeful it will work for me, we just have to both sit down at the same time to do it.TheMetal1 wrote:The first time I tried to set it up I was shifted like three times from Tech to Tech pushed up the chain to a level 3 Tech (no idea what that was, but he fixed it).Treebore wrote: I did.
