Burning Wheel

Post by Orpheus »

I've just recently gotten back into gaming since last summer so forgive me if many of you are already familiar with this particular game, but from what I've seen it looks very good. The system almost seems like someone made a "grown up" version of FUDGE (with numbers as the successes instead of the whole "+ and - thing") crossed with the Vampire/Shadowrun "pool" method and breathed a little more depth into alignments. Definitely not a replacement for C&C for me, but really something that sounds like a lot of fun to get "non-gamer" types into. I almost bet that "Medieval Murder Mystery" could be run very well with it. Has anyone tried this game? If so, what is your opinion of it?

I've never run/seen it, but I have Medieval Murder Mysteries RPG, which uses C&C mechanics.... it looks quite interesting/useful...

I've read it and own the Monster Burner, Character Burner, and Burning Wheel. It's a very cool idea, but it's a crunchy game. Lots of fiddly bits and building die pools. Not my real cup of tea (and I love die-pool mechanics). It has a lot of interesting bits and pieces to it, though... I'd suggest going to the Review section of RPG.net... there are plenty of reviews on it, as it is one of the darlings there. You can also get some info on the Burning Wiki

Many thanks Cheeplives. I've checked out the Wiki a good bit, but I haven't actually gotten any "hands on" time with the rule book and Character Burner themselves. The system does seem crunchy (especially in regards to the whole "duel of wits" area), but also seems to be rather easy to describe to someone. It sounds like it would be something fun to run once-in-a-while, but definitely not a replacement for C&C or AD&D 2e (for me anyway ). Vampire was the same way for me when it came out in the 90's: it was fun and different, but not something that I wanted to make the core of my gaming life. I would rather creep through a dungeon and find cool stuff while being faced with perplexing puzzles and traps than spend all of my time worrying about my "beliefs" in relation to said activity.
