farewell, C&C....
farewell, C&C....
..at least for now. My players want me to convert the game to 3.5, although they said of their own free will NO Prestige classes and core rules only.
I'm kinda sad about this, but I gotta gamemaster or I'd go nuts, so change I am.
But I WILL find a way to get back to C&C...I promise!

Good luck Allen, may you find your way back to the Crusade soon.

Worry not. I've seen this trend recently with a friend of mine... they dipped their toes back into the ocean which was 3.5 and thought that it was WAY too cold!
Maybe the same needs to happen here...

Its core only? If they really, really, really, mean that it won't be too bad until about 10th level.
So kill them all before they reach 10th and it will be fun.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

So, what was it about 3.5 they wanted but couldn't get from C&C. I can make a guess, but just wonderin'.
I have found that for those players who have grown up on 3e, having less class customization feels restricting. The focus on story and role-playing is hard for them because they've been used to focusing on spending their creative energies on the mechanics of character development. It's sad to me, but hard to explain to the new D&D generation. Some old-schoolers were never happy with pre-3e D&D anyway, and 3e is what they've always wanted...for real. For those, 3e is just what they like and nothing can be done about it.

Hey Allen, you gave C&C a try and that's all one can ask. I'm sure you'll get the chance in the future to run another C&C game.
Good luck.

you are the GM correct. isn't it you who gets to decide what game you want to run?
See, 3e even warps the balance between how games get decided
if they want to play in your game, and they want to play fantasy, then its C&C. if they want to play another system, then pull out a different game/genre alltogether...
(he says half mockingly)
I've never gm'd a 3rd edition d&D game, but all I ever hear is just how brutal it is on the game master to prep for games... why put yourself through that? if someone else want's to play the game, let them run it.
Cheers,
J.

In fact I did not play D&D for a long time, since I refused to DM 3.x, and my players would not take the "burden" of being a DM. Finally, one of them took it, and has become the default DM for a Forgotten Realms campaign, which was enjoying up to 6th level, but after that characters started to become a chore to maintain, so I quit both as a DM and as a player. The bottom line is: DM the 3.x game if you absolutely must play a D&D game, otherwise it is better to change genre completely. The thing I know, is that preparing was becoming a work; no thanks, not for me!
My suggestion is a compromise that bring some of C&C's strengths to your 3.x table.
* The biggest up front change is to make the base Savings Throw bonuses come from the worst of two related scores. i.e. if Str. is lower than Con, then it goes to Str. I suggest paring up Charisma to Dex and Int. to Wisdom, but it's you call.
Essentially, no dump stats when it comes to Savings Throws. This is also a quick conversion note for 3.0 mods.
* Reduce XP progression by a factor or 4 or 6 to slow the climb.
Actually, one of the more fun games I played in was a core book only. We were amazed at how versitile our PCs were without crazy feats or PrCs. It was fun to see all the players who were fighters get together and stratgize on who was going to fufill what combat role so they had a function and time in the spotlight.

here's another penny. convert their current pc's in CnC to 3.5 characters. Then, run the same encounter in both systems. If that doesn't sell the conversion to CnC to them, at least you tried everything.
Iwas running a weekly campaign in 3.5 with 6 pcs and we would spend 1 evening on one encounter. It would have been quicker to convert everyone to the dnd minis stats.
Try again and convert them and i bet running the encounter in 2 systems will help out.
