Re: CK Burnout
I'm still working my way through this book and continue to be highly impressed. The author starts by isolating the stages of prep work (brain storming, selecting an idea to work with, fleshing out the idea, documentation, and review (he uses somewhat different labels)). I assume everyone goes through those steps so there's nothing original in identifying them, but the author does a great job of explaining the importance of addressing each step separately. For example, combining brain storming with selecting an idea to work with stifles creativity. He encourages going backwards and forward through the chain of steps as needed (i.e., when you get to review you may realize there is a need for more development of the adventure idea or you may need to brainstorm additional ideas to fill out the adventure, so you may end up going back to step 3 or step 1, etc.). I have found the book to be helpful both in terms of refining my thought process for developing adventures (any time you spend time thinking about how and why you are doing things you are bound to see improvement and a greater depth of understanding) as well boosting my creativity. I have spent a lot more time on brainstorming without doing any editing. This has led to a lot more ideas being formulated that will pay off with many adventures going forward.Buttmonkey wrote:Here's a book on prepping for RPG sessions that has lots of great insight into how to be effectively creative:
