With my son's recent interest in gaming, I'm really looking forward to seeing this box set. I just hope I'm not getting my expectations to high on what I view it will be.

The current issue of Dragon Magazine has a listing for Castles & Crusades Basic in the upcoming products section (or whatever it's called). It's a nice plug for sure in the first 10 pages of that mag.

For sure. I see this as a fabulous product at CONS and for advertisements and such - in a effort to recruit/introduce new players. I've got to believe that there are many kids that are overwhelmed (and underwhelmed) by the current iteration of D&D. So many, methinks would be impressed by a simple intro box with simple quick start rules and monsters.

Rhu, hit it on the head. Where I live, in Cleveland Ohio, v3.5 is the BIG RPG (as is everywhere else presumably). I pay very close attention to trends in RPG hobby in my area, being a former game store owner and maintaining close relationships with the other game store owners/managers and players.

I can tell you this, over the past4-5 months I have noticed a "crack" in the v3.5 game. Even some of the die hards v3.5 players are voicing opinions over the massive amounts of books, options, builds, etc, etc. It's hard for the players to keep up with the hobby. It's like the Magic The Gathering syndrome, it doesn;t matter how dedicated you are to the the game, putting in so much time to keep up to date with everything becomes a full-time job.

Of course, v3.5 still dominates this hobby like no other in the history of "the art." But, from where I come from I'm starting to see the first serious stress cracks forming across the hobby. There is still a long way to go though.

Wow, this might just be the thing to get me to run C&C again. I know if Kenzerco would have ever put out a HM Basic game, I would still be playing it.

We need to take advantage of the crack and make some PENETRATION.

I just like using that word whenever I can.

We know the bare bones release information that is located at ON THE ANVIL regarding the C&C BASIC BOX SET. But what we don't know is where this product leads us? Is this simply a reprint of what we've seen in the C&C Collector's edition?
"I own a copy of the Collector's Edition and I love that box set! It's got everything I'm looking for in very basic fantasy role-playing. Why would I want to pick up this new Basic Box Set?"

Would Davis or Stephen Chenault like to comment on the impending release of this hotly anticipated product?

You see Mr. _throne, it's answers like that, that are best saved for politics. Here, on the Omote New Products Highlight Extravaganza show, I ask the tough questions. For example, Mr. _thorne, you seem to have a great deal of inside information on this project. Since the Mr. Chenaults are very busy doing... stuff, I will ask you the question. Being an owner of the Collector's Box Set, why would I want to pick up the upcoming C&C Basic Box Set? *jams imaginary microphone in face*

Because the basic set takes C&C back a step in RPG compatibility... if C&C = AD&D, then basic set = basic set.... ;)

Well. Put it this way. The original idea of the white boxed collectors set, was just that. It was fully intended to be a limited, and therefore somewhat incomplete thing.

Hence terms like the 'Spartan 300' signed bits and so forth.

This boxed set, so I understand, is going to be a little bit more along the lines of the Mentzer red box basic stuff.

A short list of classes, including race classes, and a few odd bits here and there that make it a contained unit of its own.

Now, I doubt that we will see a series of these things, simply because the boxed set is going to have the same level progression as the hard backs, so I understand.

But, for those who have the hardbacks, and eventually plan on getting the CKG, you may not need this.

The completists might, the folks who want a more contained system certainly, new players, definitely.

Peter dishes out better quantity. If you want the spot light you need to spill more.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Omote New Products Highlight Extravaganza *bump*

Looking at the upcoming release schedule, and with the advancement of the 2nd printing of the M&T, it would seem that C&C Basic might be pushed back from it's briefly stated June release. Is there any truth to this?

Also, the C&C Basic Product Page [ http://www.trolllord.com/newsite/cnc/8951.html ] states that this is being written by Davis & Stephen Chenault. My understanding is that there might be other people working on its development, possibly other contributing writer(s). Would TLG like to comment on this?

Hmm, why would there be a need for other writers? All the material has already been completed. It seems only a matter of editing and maybe some rewording to appeal to new and younger players.

Rules, game play and CK material are all in the PH or for that matter, the Boxed Set mini PH and could easily be extracted into a basic handbook or guide.

As per Mr. gideon_throne, this box set is not just a rehash of C&C Collector's or simplified version of the PHB. This lends itself to the fact that there was some rewriting at the very least. Plus, if you pay close attention to various remarks made by various posters "in-the-know," there would definitely seem to be some "new" stuff in the C&C Basic Box Set. New stuff means more writing. That is what I base my theories on.

You can also say that this reporter is very, VERY excited to see this product see the light of day (I've been preaching a new "basic" set since that day years ago when the Collector's Box was released). I've been patiently hanging on to every word mentioned about the project since it was first mentioned back in January 07 or so.
