Firefox 2 SUCKS!

Post by serleran »

Anyone else having the lovely issue of Firefox 2.0.0.3 just up and crashing, regardless of what page you're on, and no matter what is, or isn't running (like a firewall, or anti-virus, or just plain "stuff")? Its crashed about six times on these forums (it loves to do that after I press the key) and several times in gmail, at Yahoo, just searching using Google...

FF1.5 was stable. Why in the craphell would they "upgrade" it to be functionless? Stupid.

Are you running Vista? I'm having no issues on Vista.

Nope. My PC is not good enough to put Vista on it (well, I could, but it would be like watching a race between Heinz, maple syrup, and a snail...)

I use Windows 2000 on this hunk-o-crap.

Hmm, interesting. My 1.5 on my xp box doesn't show the upgrade even when I check for upgrades. - mebbe it's a beta.

But I do see it on their site and I'm downloading now. It's taking quite a while for a 5.7MB download. Wtheck, they must be hosting the file on a server with a modem!
Anywho, hope to try it shortly.

My 2k box died so I can't test it there for a while.

Well, I have been using FF 2.0.0.3 myself and have not experienced a single crash. I actually use quite a few extensions as well, so it must not simply be a FF issue, any extensions you use? Could be one of those.

There is a page on problematic extensions here, make sure you avoid the combinations or single extensions listed there. Also try loading it on safe mode and see if it still crashes.

I will try to hep you as much as I can.

I really doubt it, it is more likely to have to do with extensions or the installation failing some process but not warning him. In any case, serl, do those steps and see what comes up, I will basically be guiding you through the steps for diags when you meet issues with FF, if you would like to do it on your own, you can find the guide here.

Edit: If you want to store a copy of your whole profile, bookmarks, extensions and the like you can use the excellent FEBE extension to do that.

I have some of the extensions on the list, but none of them say they cause Firefox to crash, and the "bad" ones have been upgraded or fixed already. Haven't tried safe mode, yet, but I'm waiting to see if its consistent in when it crashes (like a timing thing, or if its just random -- seems random.)

Well, if I am not having issues despite that list of add-ons you shouldn't have any as well, I also used the same adblock and the filterset G Updater until recently (about two weeks ago) so those should not give you any trouble as well. But to make sure it is not one fo them, make sure you have the OBJ_TABS setting disabled on Adblock.

If that does not change a thing, disable Google Toolbar, I personally see no special reason to use myself, mainly because I have the google and google images search on my search plug-ins.

Fasterfox or Image Zoom should not be an issue either, use one, used another until recently as well. Noscript should not generate any issue, but if the above steps fail as well, try disabling it as well.

Of those the only one i am not familiar with is save image in folder, so I would say start by disabling that one. And to make sure you have all the latest extensions the Update Notifier extension is a gem, really.

Done.

I've opted to uninstall it. I rarely use it, and when I do, its because I've forgotten that I can use the embedded searches that Firefox offers. I also don't need it for gmail reminders... so its basically worthless.

I did change a setting on Fasterfox, as was stated on the "issues" page. I won't get rid of NoScript though. :) Its what keeps me sane.

First thing I do each day is check for updates, so I don't really need something to tell me I'm due one, and... I removed the save image thing, since I never use it, either. Well, not in a very long time anyway.

Thanks for the help. I wish it were a bit more predictable when it would die on me, but so far, its been up (about half an hour now.)

Heh, I hear on NoScript, but if you disable and for some reason it was the cause I can also say the guy behind it is great at correcting issues, so you would not have to stay without it for long.

the good part of Update notifier is that it can rest on the top right of the browser and tells me if there is any update to either firefox, an extension or a theme and I can choose to install them, best thing though is that it has a restart firefox choice that i can't get anywhere else.

the most useful one I have must be Tab mix Plus though, great session saver, session restoration and tab functionalities.

Enough rant, let us know if you find any issues, I am placing my chips on the save image in folder as the troublemake.

I haven't had any problems with the new Firefox at all. I've had issues with Opera and this website, but no Firefox. I hope you get everything worked out.

No problems whatsoever with FF2 on WinXP SP2. Honestly, I'd blame Win2K before anything else. Only slightly less problematic than Windows ME - and Windows ME was an endless pit of eternal suckitude. I hated it with the burning intensity of a thousand desert suns.

I run FF 2 on Win2K at work with absolutely no problems. So do at least 50% of the other users in my office.

Heh, you're probably correct, David. I'm now thinking this is a "Serleran" problem or as Nifel thinks - extension/addon issue.

I put FF2 on Win98 today and it flies*, baby!

I'm thinking this is just a "piss me off" problem, because it makes no damned sense. Oh well. So far its been good, and all I had to do was remove everything possibly associated with Firefox and Mozilla, and reinstall it all. That made it work. Anyway, guess a problem happened in the installation, but I was not told, nor did anything show in Event Viewer.

Oh, and saying Windows 2000 is unstable... maybe for some. XP is a piece of shite compared, seeing as my PC has never frozen or crashed in the 5 years its been running (except that time the power died and took my video card with it...) Most times a system is unstable is due to the user. (Un)Fortunately for me, I'm umm... edumecated in Windows 2000.

One of the ram slots in my Powerbook died the other day, but its still chugging along with the other 512 mb sodimm. I switched em and both sticks work, so its the damned slot, which sucks hard. I guess Ill have to buy a single 1gb stick if I want 1gb of ram again

I used to like Firefox but I kept having problems where it wouldn't let me copy and paste from screen to screen so I gave up on it.

Yeah, the Macs at work were next-to-useless. Always needing a reboot, or upgrade to this or that. Plus, its been my experience that they are more costly (may not be true, but it is my experience anyway) so I prefer the "PC" since I can build one of those for very cheap.

Heh, glad to hear it is working then serl, I though it could also be a faulty installation, had one once, so I know what i am talking about myself. As to 2K, it is a great system indeed, the old PC my brother has runs with it, or did, before his motherboard died a month or two ago.
Julian Grimm wrote:

Really? That sounds odd because I can copy and paste things just fine, and do that quite often. Or did you mean dual screens as in dual video outputs? Then I cannot say, since I never used that at home, despite my video card being able to do it.
