Eastern European style setting

Post by Julian Grimm »

Does anyone know if an eastern European style setting exists that doesn't rely heavily on the superstion and horror aspects usually sttributed to them?

This could be a cool setting for sure. I've never seen one before, but think of a fantasy game set in a very eastern european feeling, with ultra-low magic. A pseudo historical feel to the setting.

Think about a setting where one half of the setting is dedicated to a Romanian style, and the other half Hungarian or Turkish in flavor.

I think that sould like a heck of a campaign setting.

Been getting the idea from reading The Historian of all things. I'd love to see this but there is so much that usually gets added you may as well be playing Ravenloft or Castlevania. Not that there is anything wrong with it but I would like to see one without the horror stereotypes added.

I always thought that the Duchy of Karameikos was set in Eastern Europe. This was detailed for original DnD and for Second Edition, in Gazateer 1 and a boxed set which name eludes me at the moment....

It would be a great setting! Throw in Vlad -not the normal vamp but a ruthless general fighting a loosing war with the Turks....

I believe Frost & Fur has a section on Eastern European culture and stats for running a campaign there.

While science fiction, the flavor text in Rifts:Mystic Russia is a great read, introduces several ideas for specialist mages and an interesting list of relative spells. Many people hack on Rifts and while the mechanics are not the best the flavor text is often useful to mine for ideas.

I still heartily suggest the Castle Falkenstein stuff. Failing that, I can get you a copy of GURPS Castle Falkenstein -- The Ottoman Empire (or something close to that name,) which is a wonderful resource (as are most all of the GURPS "world books") for such a thing. Note, though, that CF is a game of its own, released by R. Talsorian Games, and is probably difficult to find as its OoP. You might not like the game itself (its Victorian steampunk) but it has some of what you want.

Problem with Eastern Europe is its known association with the horror genre... but other things, like Weird War II have some neat ideas, as well.

These aren't game books but I use alot of Osprey's books for flavor ideas. ( I don't own any of these so can't say exactly how helpful they would be, but I use the Norman, viking etc)

Hey just a heads up, if you can get your hands on it, there was an issue of Dragon magazine(#290 I believe) that had a fleshed out campaign setting for Eastern Europe called "Red Sails" From what I remember it was a pretty good setting that would be easily adaptable for C&C.

It was set in the Dark Ages and very humano-centric(there we're only 3 non-human races; Ludki(Dwarves), Trolls, & Trollborn) . It touches on Pagan Slavic Beliefs, Eurasian Pagan Beliefs and Finnish/Balto-Slavic Beliefs. There is also an article on how monsters are viewed and can be adapted to the setting.

There was also an adventure forthe setting in Dungeon #89

Good news Ghost_Face. I'll have to look those issues up. Might have some good ideas for a psuedo historical game I'm going to run based on The 13th Warrior in a few months.

The Red Sails article in the Dragon was a very good article and probably the best start. If I may add a not Eastern setting exactly- Mythic Russia, not the Mystic Russia recommended earlier, from Firebird Productions. It can be hard to come by and is written to use the best game system ever (imho) there is a ton of great campaign stuff in there. From the various pre-unified Russian cultures to Lithuanians, Teutonic Knights and their empire, to Mongols. Its really great stuff.

Or, you can order direct...

Its expensive. $55 USD + 5 shipping. Oh, and its for the HeroQuest RPG (not he boardgame of unrelated play.) Would be easy to convert.

A very cool book indeed.
