Best CONSOLE video games for C&C inspiration
Inspired by another thread around here, I was wondering for you video game people what are the best console games that inspire you for you paper and pencil games?
I'll stay away from computer games and RPGs bucause there are so many that would be inspirational. What about those classic (and not so classic) console video games?

Ghosts and Goblins.
Final Fantasy (the whole series).
Wizardry (the whole series).
Ultima (the whole series).
Obviously the AD&D NES games, like Eye of the Beholder, Warriors of the Eternal Sun, and the like...
Arcanum.
Legend of the Dragoon.
Wild Arms (the whole series.)
Hmmm, more as I think of them.

My best inspiration for fantasy RPGs based on console games comes from:
Lunar, Silver Star Story Complete - PS2
Lunar 2, Eternal Blue - PS2
Legacy of Kain / Soulreaver series - PS1, PS2
Dragon Warrior I, II - NES
Dragon Warrior VIII - PS2
Phantasy Star I-IV - SMS, Genesis
Shadowrun - SNES
and probably a few others too. But I'd say that these were the most inspirational for creating my RPG adventures.

I've played a number of console RPG's over the years but cant really say many of them inspired my pencil & paper games. They were fun, some had some good points, but weren't just P&P material for me.
Maybe the old SR game on the SNES. I think I may have used some ideas from there.
I am kinda getting some inspiration from GUN currently.

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
What an incredible game. As I do not have Xbox Live nor care to, I enjoy games that appeal to the 1-player or to a group of people playing on the same machine (like the Nintendo N64 and original Xbox did).
The various quests, voluminous NPC's, and 16 square miles to explore (just on the surface, not including the dungeons, building interiors, etc.) all make for a great experience. The "rules engine" if you will, differs from C&C and the various forms of D&D, but the fantasy feel is there, for sure. There is the chance of contracting Vampirism, so Goth/Ravenloft fans might enjoy that (I haven't been bitten and won't be looking to).
The fact that you can join guilds, follow or ignore quests, or even switch your current objective even while on a quest to a new one all make for a great experience.
That said, it still pales in comparison to the P&P RPG because there are still limits to where you can go, etc. And playing alone for hours is not conducive to a healthy social life, methinks. The tabletop RPG is a social event that has no equal, IMO.

For inspiring C&C, hmmm...
How about the Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2? I've really been digging that thing for old school gaming. It's got Black Tiger, Knights of the Round, and King of Dragons (The D&D arcade game Capcom put out), amongst others (it's also got Street Fighter II Turbo edition, which is entirely impossible...I can't believe I could play that game when I was younger).
God of War has certainly been inspiring, in that it definitely encourages one to think big. After all, why have an ancient, trap-ridden temple when you can have an ancient trap-ridden temple on top of a titan?
The funny thing is that for all my love of pencil & paper RPGs, I cannot stand console (or PC for that matter) RPGs.

I've always loved Phantasy Star, but outside of those I'm much like Jyrdan: I don't really care for console rpg's as a whole. I just always felt that they paled in comparison to actually PnP so much that I just didn't want too much to do with it. Kind of like instant coffee. I've been known to make an occasional exception such as in the case of Phantasy Star. Of course I think that part of that just stems from it being a cool point in my childhood. Although I have since played the Phantasy Star Collection on GBA. I do have "Eye of the Beholder" on SNES, but I haven't gotten around to really giving it a go. I think that Elder Scrolls comes the closest to recreating a cool PnP experience with its vast, open world and ability to experience whatever quest you happen to stumble upon. I tried Morrowind on the Xbox, but with my limited time (at the time and until I'm done with school here in the next few weeks) I needed something with a little more focus. Maybe I'll give it another shot over the Summer. I still love the idea though.

I've been contemplating a setting inspired by Phantasy Star, but you know how it is...where to start.
It's a big job converting to Phantasy Star, but I'm sure the reward would be immense! An awesome setting to play in, especially when based off of PSIV: End of the Millenium.
