Life's little surprises

I recently had a stroke at the young age of 39. Seven blood clots caused damage to the right side of my brain. My left arm and leg are weak, I walk slow and get dizzy when I move around. The cause of the clots wasn't identified so it could recur anytime.
I quit smoking and drinking in the hopes of avoiding further strokes, there's no saying what's in store for me hereafter. For all I know, each gaming session could be my last.
Lemme tell ya, life sure looks a whole lot different when the finish line that was so far away before is suddenly potentially just around the bend.

Hey Brian, sorry to hear that. As a professional statistican working in the medical field, I can tell you that the chances of having a recurrence are quite low, provided that you stay under control, and do not abuse yourself (stopping drinking and smoking is a good start!). Usually, such young people die at the first strike; but if they survive, they usually do not have problems again.
Best wishes
Antonio

do not worry, friend!
Are you taking aspirins or something like that? This is usually a very cheap and effective way to avoid blood clots; it is also used as a preventive treatment for "angina pectoris"

I'm on prescription blood thinner medication and aspirin as well. Hopefully that'll do the trick.

Perfect! All will be well Just make sure to not take aspirins without first eating something, otherwise you could experience problems with the stomach. Well, I guess your doctor already told you that
Cheers,

Man, I'm fortunate to have met you, and I hope the best for your recovery and future. I don't really know what else to say, as this sort of thing is not my purview... but, you'd better be at the next con I'm at, as I've got a halfling that needs to steal some more from that kitchen!

Brian, i am really sorry to hear this. Last year a friend of mine had a stroke at the age of 24, he is still a college student, eats too many hamburgers and trash food, he has changed a bit of his habits, and went to a SPA and lost 12 Kg on this january.

hey Brian,
I was thinking for the last week or two to e-mail you because you had "dissappeared". Now I see why.
I have had a Pulmonary Embolism on April 19th of 1999. I had another big deep vein thrombosis in late October of 2005. I was able to recognize it for what it was because of the "pain" that preluded my 1999 Embolism. So I got treated for a DVT instead of a heart, lung, or brain embolism.
I am on blood thinners for the rest of my life.
Since we suspect you and I share a lot of ancestory you and I may share a genetic predisposition for these clots. Which is the best my doctors have been able to come up with. I never drank to any kind of excess, never smoked, etc... The only possible predisposition I have had is being over weight.
So I have only that one "factor" (over weight) and the possible genetic predisposition due to my heritage. I forget which nationality/ethnicity the doctor cited.
Plus I naturally have a very high clotting factor (IE I stop bleeding very fast) but they say that is not a "factor".
Anyways, be careful, take the blood thinners, take care of yourself, and you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, and all the best!
...though maybe it'd help if you ate a few less player characters for breakfast, eh?

I appreciate everyone's good wishes and prayers. Simply can't thank you all enough. Keeping a positive outlook has been a real struggle.
I'll be at LGGC if it kills me (poor wording? LOL.)

Werd, Miller. Keep yourself safe and stay healthy, chieftain. You are not authorized to have further medical conditions without written permission (and you'll not be getting it), we can't afford to have a man down in the Crusade.

Ouch - I'm just a little bit older than you and recently found out I have high blood pressure that needs medicating. Glad I caught it when I did.
I've enjoyed your adventure write-ups and descriptions of gaming with your family... I just recently began running a campaign with my two oldest sons. Just last night I was telling my wife about you and your family gaming sessions - hope they continue well into the future!
Take care of yourself and best wishes!

No doubt. Hey, if you find it, be sure to pass it this way before it runs out of charges.

Brian,
I pray the Lord keeps you and heals you. Gary Gygax himself seems to be faring very well after his stroke. So, may you also reach your 60's and 70's.
God bless and Happy gaming,
