Sad but true..... I enjoy all the Middle earth & have mined the histories & unfinished tales for game ideas, but good lord how many books can someone make from old notes & ideas?

Good point and I was skeptical too. But I've heard that the editing/organizing of the material does great justice to the various pieces and puts them together in a very readable way.

I've ordered the book and so hope to have it soon to determine, . . . if everything that I've heard is true.

bah, who needs a movie - that's so like last decade, what this book needs is a MMORG! with reckless abandon, 50th level multi-class characters and the entire middle-earth mapped out in this age.

ducks and runs for cover

Cheers,

yes, but as an uber a-w-e-s-o-m-e expansion pack with lots of new nifty magic items, more fantastic monsters to kill and a many more rings that you can find

I've heard about the LOTR MMORPG, but to tell the truth, not interested in it at all. if they were to be in any way trying to hold to the feel of the book, well, the game would be nothing but 500 hours of walking

cheers,

Naw, it would be a year of 24/7 play spent in Bilbo's house, wondering where Gandalf went, and then, it would turn into a mailbox game. Ding! I got a level. Yay! I can now walk out the front door of the house. Ding! Another level... but damnit, I'm no longer authorized to solo. Have to form a hobbit guild. Bastards!

You kidding me? Getting to a party alone is and endless amount of words long in the book, i say that if anyone gets past "an unexpected party" chapter they are ready to read the three volumes. The trick is getting past it.

Got the book yesterday -along with cool books for the little one, yeah book sale!- & it is much smaller than I thought it would be. I have't had a chance to read it yet, but did do the random flip through & read a paragraph here & there. It did feel like good Tolkin not just notes thrown together.

That's good to hear. I need some classic Tolkien back in my life right now to get me away from the throw-away authors of today's fantasy fiction.

Bought the book yesterday morning at Hastings for 30% off. Read it in the afternoon and into the evening. Not a bad book at all, and filled with Alan Lee illustrations.

I'm also thinking of reading the whole published works of JRR again in the order of:

Children of Hurin

Simarillion

Hobbit

Fellowship

TT

Return of the King

and then possible diving into some of the Lost Histories again... maybe.

The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is a cycle of poems (or songs) detailing events in Bombadil's career.
Farmer Giles of Ham is interesting.
The Father Christmas Letters are good, too, especially if you have children.

Twelve, Remainder of Two... sorry I couldnt read the rest of the thread till i did the math in my head off the first page.

I used to REALLY suck at math but I've learned all sorts of cool adding and subtracting tricks being a teacher. Then again maybe i still suck at math. I added all the numbers on the left, multiplied the numbers on the right and devided. If thats not the solution I give up. HAHAH.

Since there were no parentheses, the order of operations mandates that the division/multiplication takes effect first. The addition is then performed. That means the last part -- 10 / 2 * 2 = 10, and the whole is just a summation, equaling 55.

I would agree in this case, but only (for me) because I've read a lot of the story in other places before.

I just finished Chapter 1 on Sunday. I hope to read more tonight.

Everyone who said this is solid JRR Tolkien is correct. And I do believe I will be reading The Silmarillion after this, as well. It just seems to be the natural follow-up. Of course, as Omote's list shows, that only means The Hobbit and LotR are sure to follow -- and not in movie form!

I too started reading it, and I love it. The previous version was one of my favourite tales, and I really appreciated how the things have been put together to make the book as independent from the Silmarillion as possible.

OK, got the book. It looks really excellent. Nice artwork and map. Good layout and such and it's . . . new Tolkien work (yeah as mentioned before - sort of, but still better compiled/edited), so I can't wait to read it!

I'm through Chapter X of The Children of Hurin. It's not bad, but it is rough in places and so isn't very Tolkienesque. It reads rather like an early draft of the story.

I also find Alan Lee's depictions of Elves a bit . . . weird. They look like sickly middle-aged men with long hair. (Up to this point I hadn't been familiar with his illustrations.) I guess we all have different opinions of how things ought to look -- I see now why Peter Jackson's movies looked the way they did (Lee was a "conceptual designer") -- and I hated the way the movies looked.

Finished the book last night... yeah, I'm a slow reader. So what you wanna fight about it? The Chuldren of Hurin is good, good Tolkein. I'm not just saying this as a fanboy, but the book is well written and the story does just pop off the pages as a total fairy tale almost, especially if you can seoperate yourself from LOTR. It's a pretty dark tale, but heroic and very sad. If you liked the Simarillion, then you'll probably love this book because IMO it's written much better.

Chello!

Just got my copy from UPS...must say that one thing I like already is how the map in the back is designed so you can have it open and still see the whole thing.

Just finished the book. It's a depressing tale, but it is way more readable than the Simarillion. I read The Simarillion, but it was only out of the sheer desire to know as much about the Tolkien storyline as I could. In contrast I was reading The Children of Hurin because I was enjoying the tale. Good story, sad though.

Good reviews. If it's written better than the Silmarillion, then I'm in for some good reading as I just started the book.
