DangerDwarf, WOTC is canceling MW's Dragonlance license too

Post by Treebore »

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

That's a shocker. Saw it a mile away when they announced Dragon and Dungeon were dying. Welcome to the Iron Hand.

Yes, this is sad news. I only had some of the MWP DL books, but they were doing a nice work, even though I am not interested in d20.

I'm telling you, this is WOTC's big gear up to 4th edition. I can feel it in me bones.

Ravenloft suffered that a while ago as well, I think they are seeking to make profit out of their own trademarks, I always doubted D&D is profitable in Hasbro's terms.

I expect nothing less from WOTC at this point.

I expect them to publish an adventure or two on the setting on the next year, they did just that with Return to Castle Ravenloft.

It's defintely not a shocker, but sad none-the-less. I have also enjoyed SP and MWP's Dragonlance line, despite it being d20. There is some really good stuff in those books.

I better get my copy of Races of Ansalon, or I'll be pissed as hell.

Weiss has stated that all of their stuff in works will be out before the license ends.

Yeah, yeah. That's fine and all but Races of Ansalon will be delayed for more then 9 months, and that is IF it is managed to be released in June 2007.

It's great that they are going to finish everything in the pipeline, I'm assuming that WOTC let MWP at least do that, but we'll probably never get to see Dragons of Spring.

Also looking forward to MAP POUCH: LEGENDS. The world maps looks damn fine.
I BETTER BE ABLE TO GET THAT TOO MWP! *points menacingly*

This has really hit me hard since Ive worked for so long to keep DL gaming alive. Ive been part of this fantastic group of designers, and now this is coming to a close.

The Dragonlance Nexus will be doing everything it can to keep Dragonlance gaming alive. While most of it will be focused on continuing with the foundation set down in the d20 rules, I definitely want to see some content from the C&C fans and fans of older editions of D&D.

So if any of you can lend a hand, I would appreciate it.

Well DH, as along as there has been 3E DL, we have appreciated your effort to keep it alive. Hopefully we'll still be able to see more good work from you and the rest of the Nexuseers.

Exactly my proposal on the DL forums! If the decision is taken to create other sourcebooks, my idea is to make them strongly roleplaying-based, with the mechanical aspects reduced to a minimum and referenced in an appendix, were versions of those concepts can be implemented in C&C, SAGA and AD&D. I guess it would be an awesome way to bring Dragonlance forward.

I for one can lend an hand for the C&C, AD&D and SAGA parts.

Sauron is in Mordor, I mean Renton, amassing his armies for another assault on what role-playing games are.

I've considered the idea of multi-stat online sourcebooks.

Even at that, though, if you have an idea for something DL, write it up, and use the system you want.

WTF? Has WotC decided to hose everyone? I'm guessing Zeitgeist will be next and Blackmoor D20 will go down the toilet.

I seem to have read that ZGG has seen its license renewed (it should be on their site).

I laugh as this is the beginning of the end for WOTC. Sounds like they are putting all their eggs in one basket for something in the future.

Actually, rather than putting their eggs in one basket, it is more likely that they are pulling the DL stuff back to wait for the animated movie, and then recouping the interest in-house.

WQ, that is a very good idea. Why not repackage the DragonLance game with official artwork from the movie? Could be a good buisness decision, and frankly from what we've seen and heard about the DL movie, it might be a good looking book.

Well, I'm not a gaping jaw-dropper for Dragonlance, but I'm thinking this has less to do with d20 or the game world as it does about the green bling in Hasbro's pocket-eye.

Well, of course it does.

Hasbro has a duty to its shareholders that MWP/Sovereign Stone do not.

What's interesting here is that no RPG companies are coming out and complaining about Hasbro/WOTC's actions in not renewing the DL license (or that for Dragon and Dungeon). Because Hasbro/WOTC is simply seeking to profit from its intellectual property; and if company X were to criticize Hasbro/WOTC it would then be admitting that a company doesn't have an absolute right to profit from its own IP.

*chuckles* No other companies are complaining about said liscence yank for a far more pragmatic reason. Anything that causes WOTC to loose face is only good for other game companies. ^_~`

Most likely guess thus far.

They weren't already absorbed? I thought that happened a long time back.

No, that step of the process was the "emasculation" of Wizards.
"Hasbroken" stinks. My son's 'Hungry Hungry Hippos' costs more nowadays (which is fine, considering inflation) but the marbles are hollow and plastic. My game had real marbles. His game sends a boy, his father, and the family beagle scrambling around on the floor looking for lost marbles. Argh.

And we play 'Chutes and Ladders' with the d6 die from the C&C box set because the spinner is cheaper than Mr. Burns from the Simpsons.
