*chuckles* It wasn't bad for what it was. Certainly a step up in quality vs the D&D movies.

Don't know why? Works on this end.

That isn't saying much.

*smiles* It's a kids film. I wasn't expecting much.
Im still waiting for something that'll top Lodos War. ^_~`

Since everyone stopped arguing religion I will not bring it back myself.
I saw one or two episodes or whatever Lodoss War had, but I couldn't bear to see anything else, I just can't get around weapon-like elven ears heh. I haven't seen Eragon, but a friend said it was good, he read the books as well, and liked them.
In my understanding it is a very childish theme so I wasn't really expecting much from it, I mean, anything with a last dragon rider on the hero is bound to be meh for me. And I never watched the second D&D movie, the first made me run from the second like the devil from the cross.

Easter eggs and chocolate bunnies?
Funny, I don't recall "chocolate bunnies" being mentioned in church . . . as for Easter eggs, they might have been associated with fertility festivals at one point in time but they came to be associated with the end of the Lenten fast (during which one abstained from animal products such as milk, butter, and . . . eggs).

No, because if the ideology had remained the trappings never would have been permitted.
One need only consider the Church's reaction to the Judaizers. They were permitted for a time but later explicitly condemned for fear that continuing Jewish ritual practices would lead to abandoning the Christian faith.

I certainly intend to check out the book series mentioned in the original topic though.
How do you know it's "harmless" if you haven't read it?

Wow. I thought that you said all of the evidence were on a multitude of university websites, but instead we got an ad for a book. Great research Peter.

All books are harmless. Its a binding of paper and ink. About the only harm a book could truly do anyone is if the paper is particularly durable and someone gets a papercut. Although I spose someone could cause headaches by hitting another over the head with a hardback.

*chuckles* No, I suggested you look up any given course curicculum and look into the classes.
And I happen to think that site is rather grand research. By checking out any of the key names it mentions on any given google search one can find all sorts of interesting things. ^_^

I'm sorry Peter, but most scholars do not take the idea seriously. So you have a few cats (one of whom teaches at a slightly...uh...unorthodox seminary) perpetuating some ideas which sprang up in the 19th century. Just because similar ideas have existed in the world doesn't mean that Christianity borrowed from them. It is speculation and there is not hard, factual evidence for it. I'm not going to agree with you on this and you're not going to agree with me. I'll not say anything else about it and I'll end it here. Now please go draw us something.
*grins* Don't get the books based on the movie then. They might reach out and eat you. Some books are dangerous

From what I have read up on the series it looks as if it may be attacking the legalism and dogma associated with the church. Again I have to read the series to see how I interperate it so I cannot comment on the possible attacks until I do.
That said it looks like an interesting story.

Now, if you really want some odd ball stuff, I suggest the Nightside stories by Simon R Green. ^_~`
Some neat concepts for gaming therin.

I have a bad feeling for THE GOLDEN COMPASS once it opens in theaters. Do you realize that this flick is going to open up against ALIEN VS. PREDATOR 2?!?!?!?!

yeah, the Alien vs Predator 2 thing was said in jest. Yes, they are really making AvP2, and as of now they are schedule to both open the same week... but AvP2 isn;t going to take anything away from TGC.

I don't see that either unless it is a vast improvement over the original. Saw AVP for a fix and nothing more.

Agreed. Same here, I like that... I saw ot for a fix. Nice, because that's exactly the case. AvPs creature effects were still top-notch.
You know what's awesome, how a thread on His Dark Materials, and a high-brow religious debate has spireled right out of control into a discussion in Alien vs. Predator.
*clears throat*

Books are harmless? I beg to differ. Books and writings have started revolutions (Marx, Luxemburg), have created new religions (Luther), started a war, at least according to a persident of the U.S of A. (Beecher Stowe). Heck, they even brought us to what we are doing in our free time. Roleplaying games (JRR, Leiber, Howard, et al).
Books change the way we think and act since the day we've started to read. And it would be a sad thing if books were only harmless things made out of paper
