Warhammer Fantasy RP setting

Post by Julian Grimm »

I've been hearing alot about this lately especially the setting. Those that like it seem to swear by it. So can anyone tell me more about the game especially the setting and how well certain ideas work into C&C.

The idea of the empire and such seems to fit into my ideas for my own setting as well.

It's a pretty cool setting. Very dark and bleak. Some oldschoolers are turned off by the "punk" look that some of the dwarves were portrayed as having in the artwork, but it's not a big deal IMO.

Much of the world (Called the Old World) is similar in history and technology to Renassance Europe. The Empire is similar to the Holy Roman Empire. There's Italian City States, a chivalric French country, a Russian type country and a Britsih type countr to name a few.

The setting focuses on a long slide into madness and destruction through the forces of Chaos. In fact, it was written in a very fatalistic tone that civilazation would eventually be doomed to fail, that all the heroes were simply delaing the inevitable (at least in the 80's version I had).

The game system was tough on characters and more grim and gritt than "super-heroic" like D&D. A few hits and most characters would be dead. No 100 hp characters.

I rememeber the magic system being somewhat wonky, but that was the 80's version, so I don't know if that was altered in the new edition.

Instead of archtype character classes there were a ton of career paths that characters had that taught them certain skills. Everything from witch, to knight to rat catcher to pimp. Alot of these I thought would be neat to turn into C7C npc classes.

The nice part about the setting is that there is a ton of sites devoted to it on the internet, so if ou were looking to port its setting over to a C&C game w/out having to but I bunch of the books, I think that would be ver doable.

Hope that helps,

Morty

My current campaign, set in DCC35, The Known Realms, has a definite WFRP influence. It isn't written into the setting by the authors, but I've given the Empire of Crieste an amalgam of Roman and WFRP Imperial influences. This is part of the reason I love boxed settings with spartan detail about the given regions. I love fleshing out the flavor and detail of the setting on my own.

The Empire from WFRP is a perilous place, frought with danger from the forces of Chaos and the evils of men. The roadwardens and riverwardens can only do so much to make the Imperial byways safe for the common traveller, so even the most humble of peasants dare not go armed outside of the comforting bosom of the Imperial cities. River travel is the safest bet, but even then, the greenskins ambush river boats from time to time and the forces of Chaos are never far from the dangerous banks of the muddy rivers of the Empire.

I'm pretty much sold on this. So, can anyone tell me if there is a stand alone setting book?

There isn't really; the setting and system are firmly welded together. However, if you're just after the setting, grab yourself a 1st Edition copy, which should save you a lot of money. Unfortunately, the new edition seems to be using the "break everything up into as many books as we can get away with" business model. The woodcut-style artwork in the first book adds a a lot of flavour, too.

This is quite true. The 1st Ed book is a complete game in one book. It's got loads of setting info and even has creatures in there that STILL arent in the new 2nd edition. Their business model is cutting every little piece of the world into little bite sized portions to offer 7-10 books per year.

If you want the "setting" it helps to have the Warhammer war game, and the 1st edition RPG, as much of this kind of thing is detailed therein. Also, some of it is put into all the Warhammer-related games, like Warhammer Quest. I would suggest the 1e WHRPG book. It kicks ass.

There is a setting book for WFRP2, it's called Sigmar's Heirs. However, that book is specifically designed to have the WFRP2 core book with it. But if you are just looking for descriptions of areas in The Empire, Sigmar's Heirs is the way to go.
