Allowing PCs to rule a domain

Post by angelius »

So my PCs have gotten powerful enough that I think they are able to rule a domain. I've been looking at some rules with a D&D background,

D&D Green Box - domains section

Birthright Campaign Box

Anyone knows anywhere else I can find rules for ruling a domain? Specifically random tables of events etc.

I looked at other stuff ie. Pendragon etc. Nothing there. I'd like something simple yet robust.

Hmmm. I don't recall the specific types of tables your looking for. I know I came up with plenty of ideas just using Expeditious Retreats Magic Medievel Societies: Western Europe and Gygax's World Building books to flesh out populations and resources. Gary's World Builder books probably have a table or two like that, I am just not remembering them off the top of my head.

I seem to remember something from the Forgotten Realms having tables like that. IT was probably in one of the boxed sets, like the one with Castles in it.

Probably some old Dragon mags, especially from the 1E and 2E days, has articles like that. So if you have the Dragon Archive on CD it will probably be worth searching.

Thats all I can think to suggest.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

The green box stuff is mostly duped in the Rules Cyclopedia, but it may have some things that the box does not (doubtful, though.) Other ideas would the Castles and Catacomb guide, but that is primarily a book for building such, rather than running a kingdom. There is a RPG which is based on medieval history, and a free download called Fiefs, which I heartily recommend, but do not have a link for currently... Google it, I'm sure it'll turn up.

I havn't done this, but in going over the RC or the Basic D&D Companion Rules, there would be very little to convert. Honestly, I've never even looked beyond this for a resource for C&C Domain rules.

Just sayin.'

I agree. Always been a good source for me too.

Yup I'm building an excel spreadsheet for domain control using the green box set. But I'm kinda looking for some random tables for domain events.

ie. plagues, dry spells and other political events.

I'm going to check out ser's recommendation.

Here is what I was talking about earlier. Its about 3/4 down the site, and links to other sites holding the file. Its a sampler, but should give you a good idea of what the rest is like. Damn cool info.

There was a great article in an old Dragon relating to the subject. I believe it was in the issue that featured a forbidding castle in the mountains, with the approach bordered by skulls on pikes. And it did indeed have a random events table.

Cool I built a nifty spreadsheet that I'm using to run the numbers behind the domain RPG section of my campaign. It's pretty cool.

This section of the campaign is so darn addictive. To make it worse, it is a play by post on my forum and I think my player (1 does) and I check every hour.

So much fun, I think when it is possible in your campaigns you should definitely try it.

Ah yes, the Pokethulhu adventure game. I would not dream of building a stronghold without it.
In all seriousness, though, I agree with the group: the Rules Cyclopedia is the first place I would go.

Heh, well, it has links to Pokthulhu, but I meant the file(s) in the All Systems Library.
Direct download.

Yes, that would be Dragon Magazine # 145, which featured the following special articles (preceded by page numbers):

SPECIAL ATTRACTION

13 Halls of Glory:

Building castles up—and tearing them down.

14 A Castle Here, A Castle There — Daniel Salas

If you have five minutes and some dice, you can have a new castle, too.

18 Holding Down the Fort — Matt Iden

“On Monday, all of your guards catch the flu. Some orcs show up on Tuesday just as your wizard resigns, and. . . .”

22 Strongholds Three — Arthur Collins

Why elven castles look like hills, and other details on fantasy forts.

28 Your Home Is Your Castle — Patricia Cunningham-Reid

Castles are hard enough to attack, but have you ever tried living in one?

36 Bazaar of the Bizarre — J. Jasper Owens

Call on a deva or 200 berserk quaggoths— all in the defense of your

home!
"If you had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you."
