Calling all...
Calling all...
Western PAers, eastern OHers, and southern NYers. How many of you folks would be interested in a small get together in the Erie/Meadville, PA area for a mini-con sometime over the summer.
I'm going to try to figure something out for a weekend long gaming mini-con but want to know if it would be worth the time and effort to organize. So, just jump in here, give me a yes I'd probably attend or a no way Hose. And I'll start to figure out the particulars from there.

Its very likely I could attend, along with my yum. Erie is much closer than other areas... and, if possible, it could be the first Society-sponsored con, as well. This is some of the stuff I want the Society to do... local gatherings, based on regions. So, put me down as a "yes" but its still slightly tentative, due to not knowing exactly when it happens...

That would definiately be awsome if it was a Society sponsored event.

I love to attend! However, there are always a ton af variables to consider. What we all should do is get to at least 1 Troll Con, Winter Dark Con, LGGC!
What is our problem (for those of us who never go?)!

My problem is usually time and money. I have little of either it seems when it come to going to the major cons. I think Origins is the closest one to me and it's still about a 4-5 hour drive one way.

Yeah, R, I hear you on that one. Rigon, I can't remember. Do you ever get to Origins?

I've never been to a major con before. The only one I've ever been to was a local (at the time) on called COScon in Butler, down near Pittsburgh. But I've always wanted to and Origins seems to be the most likely for me, as it is the closest (realitively).

Big cons aren't always what they're cracked to be. I was disappointed with GenCon when I went, but I was trying to find pick-up games and the like, and had no idea where to even bother... and when I did find some, they were all card games, and not RPGs. However, the sheer number of dealers (and good deals) and Frank's auction was a high point, as was seeing the Trolls in their element. So, I guess it was a mixed bag for me... went in with too high of desires, and let myself get myself down about it.
Anyway, would this con thing be held in something, like a hotel? That can be pricey.

I was thinking more like a pavilion in my yard or something like that. I don't know to many places in Erie (I'm about 30 miles south of there) and I can't afford to rent a hall or anything like that. I was thinking the "con" would be more like an informal gathering where we can get together and play a few games. I live about a mile away from Conneaut Lake, about 1 mile from Conneaut Lake Park (not sure if it is opening this year as it is always up in the air wether or not it will open), and about 7 miles from Pymatuning Lake and like I mentioned Erie is only 40 minutes away. So if families wanted to come, there would be other things for them to do.
On a side note, when I mentioned this to my wife, she kind of rolled her eyes and called me a geek. But I don't think there would be to much problem. Like I said in another post, my yard is fairly big and could hold 5-10 tents. The only problem I foresee is bathroom fecilities.

That would work if I had any flowers. I mowed them down, less crap for me to take care of.

So far, we're probably looking at around 5 or 6 people. If that's the case, I'd definately be willing to put you all up in my yard. This way would definately be a gaming "con," as I've no way of inviting dealers.
Also, I'm free for any weekend other than Memorial Day or July 7th (weddings). So if the end of June isn't good, we could schedule it for another time. This way expenses would be limited to gas and food. I have a grill and will have my fire pit in soon, so hot dogs and hamburgers.

PS: I don't think the neighbors would be too annoyed... I live across the road from a cemetery.

I don't know if any of you are LARPers, but some of the best sessions I played in were in dark woods or near a local cemetary. It might sound kinda lame, but with the right players and setting, it was quite fun... especially when you are a mad Eastern-European Brujah like I was!

Hi Rigon. Say, can one assume that the state parks have camping facilities? Also, how is the local motel situation?
Just thinking, so as not to impose upon ya, if we can make it out that way this summer. And our family loves to camp, so we're always looking for great state or local parks.

Rhu, some of the state parks have camping facilities. But I'm not sure which ones or how close. As to the hotel/motel situation, I'm not sure. I've never had to stay at a motel in this area. Around the lake there are at least 3 small motels and over in Meadville (the "big" town, 10 miles away) there is a Holiday Inn and a Comfort Inn (I think). And there is always Erie (30 miles or so north of me).
I'll look into the state parks for ya if you want. I think there are some camping areas over by Pymatuning.

The PA side at the town of Linesville is aproximately 6-7 miles. The Causeway over the lake to Ohio is about 10 miles or so.

Let's see, I can be to the lake in 15 minutes at Linesville and can make the Causeway in 20. I think I'd drive that far for a game or two.

So maybe we should think about doing this at Pymatuning. The lake is right there for fishing or swimming. They have camping facilities and I wouldn't have a bunch of crazy gamers crawling around my yard for a weekend.

Here is some information for the state parks on the PA side of Pymatuning Lake. I was looking at the Linesville facility. Let me know what you all think.
