Why is it so hard

I'm trying to start a second group but darn it, its near impossible to find players.

My main group is starting to lose focus as real life is taking over and I'd like to find some new players but there's no real source. (Maybe a website idea there.)...

How did you guys find your players? (if they arent family or friends you convinced)

I'm going through the same thing here. No players and if I find them no consistant games. It's damn depressing.

Go into your local game shop, if you have one nearby, and ask to run demos. One of the best ways.

Its good all around, you find new players who are likely to order stuff from said game shop.

Depressing I tell you!

Problem is that my FLGS is full of youngin's and nothing against them but their style of gaming is totally different than mine. It's a nightmare trying to find a person much less a group of mid-20 to early-30 players.

I usually invite people someone in my group knows and who is interested, they are welcome for a few sessions after which we decide if he/she stays or not, so far non have worked for us, so now I am down to 2 players with another 2 candidates tomorrow (we are thinking 1 will not even attend, mind you).

Someone should really start a directory of players.

Well, I met the TLG guys that game in my group from buying their C&C products. I met one of my best players at the LGS, but he has moved away now. The other guys I met at work or back in school.

My main problem is that I'm fairly far off the beaten track. There's no game stores nearby, or a large population to find gamers in.

Add to that my work schedule. I only occasionally have weekends off and I work 14-16 hr days, graveyard shift on top of that. Even when I do find players, my schedule can be a bitch to work around. Because of that, I generally try to find gamers that work with me...even further reducing the pool.

Hell, because of my schedule, I generally cant even join on-line games.

But, on the plus side, my wife games too so if nothing else I run solo adventures for her if I can't get a group going.

Running demo's is a great way to network, but it takes a long time and persistance to find the players that you would really want to play with. Just keep running those demos.

Once you get a core group of players (even only a few), as them to further search out players on their own. Keep the networking going. Make sure you and your players even ask other people at school, work, or other events.

The hard part is to keep the "network" going.

There is a small article on treasure tables (link) that helps you by giving ideas on how to get new players, maybe it is worth a shot.

Well I guess this thread is my blog on my quest:

I sign on with meetup.com to try and find players. But no luck so far. It seems to be a small group and no one is willing to communicate back and forth. It's almost like everyone has that.. .omg I cant email that person what if he's a weirdo thing...

*chuckles*

That's what I'm working on. My son will play OD&D, but still has a 6 year old attention span. My girl is only 4 so waiting for her.

But patience, thats all I need right now is patience. A few more years and I'll have a built in group.

Found a dragonlance 3.5ed group locally. I guess I'll go check them out. Late 20's, no cheese... sounds okay. If anything I guess theres that network.

You usually require your gaming groups to bring cheese?

I know if there aren't at least 3 domestic and 1 imported cheeses at a table, then count me out.

No game.

You want some wine with that cheese?

No, wait, that's not how that joke goes...

I grew 1 gamer and recruited my family (my brother when we were young; 10 years later our baby sister, my wife, and my brother-, sister-, and mom-in-law more recently). My son is 4 and likes to play but the attention span can be a challenge (we keep the group small when he plays). I didn't realize that you HAVE to railroad a 4 year old. He met my mom-in-law's PC at a bar at an inn and didn't want to leave.

Someone's been hanging with his uncles too long, I think. Like them, I am sure he'll be playing dwarven PC's before too long.

BTW, I would also suggest the FLGS idea. The owner of mine is open to a demo or whatever, should I ever find that elusive element: TIME. I do know, though, that many an owner would love to get demos going if it meant happy customers and increased business.

Try www.meetup.com to set up a Castles and Crusades group, though you should find to label it as "Dungeons and Dragons" group.

Down here in South Florida, there are several such groups. At least one for every county and a couple of extra for the game stores.

As a heads up, there is a fee attached to starting up the group.

I feel your pain though. The closest game store is pretty much overrun by the gamers who live in the same neighborhood. Even though some of these guys are in their 40s, all of them are unmarried with no kids and no real careers, i.e., gaming is their life.

In short, you can't start a new game because the same 15 guys rotate their own 3.5 games there every night of the week. Throw in the card tournies and wargames that bring in the real money on the weekends and there's simply no room.

I guess I'm lucky I've managed to find enough family, friends and co-workers to fill out my group.

You know I just moved to Ft. Lauderdale and I swear in the LGS there are two guys that look like that. I'd game with them but they were only dealing Magic. Maybe I could try magic again...

...damn I'm desperate.

I played magic last weekend. I actually enjoy it but I'm also looking to get the guy I played against into C&C. But it was some form of gaming at least.

You know I tried magic but it just didn't have the right feeling for me. That's not to say it's bad; maybe using it or Warlord for mass battles. Besides all my cards are from the early 90's anyway.

Otherwise everyone else at the GS is playing 3.5. I don't mind playing, just can't DM it anymore.

I like it for the strategy involved. The hardest thing for me is divorcing my role playing instincts from M:TG.

Ack. Last time I played MtG was with Alex Gygax at GenCon a few years ago, and it had been so long prior that I didn't know what half the cards did... I can only imagine what its like now. Game was devolved from a fun little "kill your opponent" to "collect all the combos!"

Welcome to the neighborhood. PM me and we'll trade phone numbers. I'll give you the nickel and dime tour of the "gaming sights" this weekend or so.

In fact, I'm trying to get a home demo of Castles and Crusades going in the next two weeks as a favor to a friend who's leaving for Coast Guard duty by the end of the month.

I've always looked for the message boards at my FLGS's where ever I moved to to find players. My current FLGS has such an active network of gamers that I often find myself with too many wanting to game! At one time I was running 3 games/week!

If you don't have a game store that supports RPGers, I'm sorry for you. But that is the trend as more and more of them choose to go online for their RPG products. It will only be getting worse. My FLGS is struggling and if it goes under, the gamer network around here will crumble.

I found the secret...I joined a LARP forum. I know, I know...but its working!
And suprisingly a ton of females LARP...so that's where all the girl gamers go. heh.
