'Tis a fine setting to play in. One thing I always liked about Greyhawk is that you can really mold the setting easily to your liking. Other settings like Darksun or Ebberon are very specific and are a lot more difficult to make "yours."
From a classic swrods and sorcery standpoint, Greyhawk could easily be a game about political intrique, military campaigning, exploring/wilderness travel or good old fashioned dungeon delving. Heck, there are so many different things you can do in the setting, it's very universal.

I prefer Gygax version over any later pastiches. However, from the later versions, I only have respect for From the Ashes, exactly because Carl Sargent changed the setting a lot to create his unique own thing. The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer is also well written, but it don't give me anything I already have from the original boxed set.

I'm inclined to disagree, but why spout vitriol over opinions with people I like, eh? Besides, what works for your game is your game. My opinion differs, but you don't have to play in my game. I do like some of the post-Gygax era material.
Yay! I found the article I intimated earlier:

(Note: I hope my first paragraph doesn't come off as snarky or condescending. I am known for putting my foot or keyboard in my mouth!)

OMote just gives his opinion. I don't think I've ever seen him tell anyone how they should play.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Opinionated... me?!
Actually, I agree 1000% that the game is your own. Play with what feels good, as long as you play. Hell, I tend to get criticized for dressing up all moody and stuff for LARPing from time to time, but I don't care because it's fun for me and my friends.
Carl Sargent rules.

I voted Gygaxian, mostly because that's the one I know best. I know lots of folks who like the later eras (and I even respect some of them - like Omote!), but I like the earlier version - it seems more open-ended to me.

WHAT? Some IDIOT is giving away valuable Greyhawk-related game information for FREE? That's absurd. You have to pay for EVERYthing, including Rob's old discards.
I trust it's worth what it cost you.

Interesting; where did you find anything about it?
I belive I found it somewhere on the web. The folder I have contains about 15 maps and about 6 different word files. If I'm not supposed to have it let me know and I'll get rid of it. Or I can send it to you and you can confirm whether this really is your work.
All in all if this is your Aquaria I am impressed and would have loved to have seen it given the full treatment.

Also wanted to add that I adden Yggsburgh in and the Haunted Higlands are now part of the Cairn Hills. Been looking over my boxed set again and I am taken by the simplicity and moldability of the setting.

Er... How much do you want for a copy? Too bad you don't still live in Philly. I'm right across the Delaware River.

Fourteen maps, four rtf files, and one text file. Unfortunately, only thirteen of the maps are usable in my copy, as the map labeled "Overview2.gif" of the post-war Aquaria seems to have been corrupted in transmission.

These three quotes sum it up for me. I was looking online for a list of "why Greyhawk?" file that I downloaded a few years back, but alas I cannot find it and the computer on which it was saved crashed over a year ago. It goes into detail why pre-GW Greyhawk is preferred, because unlike Forgotten Realms the PC's are the heroes, not the big NPC's errand-runners. Also, there are no "pop-tart" baddies who pop up to make trouble. Iuz and the like are always there in a constant tension.
I use post-Gygax era GH to fill in some holes (mostly the pantheons), but for the most part I don't use it. I fill in the blanks using the books Rhu lists as my inspiration to flesh out more myself.

I love this article. Greyhawk aside, its got some great points on how campaign worlds in general should be (IMO).

Seirously I got my virtual claws on a FtA set and I have liked what I have read so far. I do see some errors with consitancy already but it has been a pretty fine read so far.

Julian--
I agree. While I am somewhat of a purist, relying on the '83 boxed set as my primary resource, there are some post-Gygax GH materials of noteworthiness. FtA has some stuff that I like, but its reconciliations with the war I avoid -- the changes wrought by it, and so on. But the author does well in fleshing out some undeveloped aspects of GH that I find interesting in some areas and inspiring in others. That being said, I've often felt the same way about a lot of the fan-derived material at "Canonfire!" because those are some of the most steadfast fans of GH I've ever met.

The idea of the wars never bothered me. Their execution and outcome needed work IMNSHO. Three years was far too short a time for the pent up aggression that was portrayed in the set.
I agree that I do like it more for the gaps that are filled in and Gygax's 'Hawk is still the ultimate version but in most circles and later works much of Gygax's work is still preserved. Unlike what I had been lead to believe by others. Just my 2 coppers.
