Help me buy a book

Post by Rigon »

I have $50 to spend at Barnes and Noble. I was thinking of get one of the GFW books, but I'm not sure which one I want (I'm leaning toward Insidiae). Any advice or thoughts on the series would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if GFW is on your buy list, you then have to ask yourself what is the most useful to you of the series. Personally, World Builder has been the most useful. Not neccessarily for building worlds per se, but for lists, and lists of ideas from which to pull from. World builder is great for just lists of little things, like types of trees, herbs, window dressings, containers, and bodies of water. There's a lot more to World Builder then that, but this is what is useful to me. Insidiae has some nice elements, but overall didn't help me write my own adventures and modules. Canting crew is very cool for the same reasons as World Builder, except narrowed down to a "street" level.

Overall, I'd pick up the entire series one at a time if need be as there was at least a few things in each book that I gleaned a little information from.

Sorry can't help any more then that.

I'm with Omote... I'd start with World Builder or Living Fantasy -- and wait for the revised Canting Crew but put it on your list for future purchases. I'm a big fan of the entire series, but I've referenced WB and LF the most.

If you want to go GFW... I'd suggest World Builder or Living Fantasy as first choices, unless you have problems with names of things, and then, I'd say go with the Book of Names, unless you have a problem with plots and adventure making, in which case Insidiae is your choice, unless you need a book on thieves (I still have a copy of the original that no one wanted...) then you're good to go with Canting Crew, unless you need a book on planes where you'd be better off with Cosmos Builder, unless you need a book on real world pantheons, so that Lejendary Pantheons is the choice. ;) Heh, basically, I'm biased, but all of the GFW books are useful. Some are moreso, in "casual situations" for the DM and player, but they can all be extremely helpful.

They are all good for inspiring me and help me come up with and organize my ideas.

I would recommend World Builder be your first as well.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

The other I'd ask myself is how long are you willing to wait before you get some of those books. I'm very much interested in the series too, but since a bunch of them are getting some revisions and a face lift, I'd trying (hard) to bide my time. The Canting Crew Re-Visited should be out soon and that one is on the top of my list. The Cosmos Builder is pretty much already in the 'newer' style and is VERY reasonably priced. The Lejendary Pantheons also coming out soon will sport the same look from what I understand.

Is it important to wait? No... not really. The actual game oriented material in the older versions is for d20 and Lejendary Adventures. The newer revisions are geared towards C&C and Lejendary Adventures. The d20 material can easily be adapted for C&C without breaking a sweat.

I really liked the Cosmos Builder and I was surprised how much I keep picking it up... it's simply a very nice book. Much like the rest of the series.

Thanks everyone. I do plan on getting the whole series, eventually. I just happened to get the $50 for B&N and am looking for something to buy. I think I might get Insidiae, mainly because I feel that plots and adventures are my weakness as a GM. Who knows, I may just hold off and see if B&N gets the new AWD folio, then I won't have to convince the wife to let me get it.

Insidiae

After buying The Canting Crew last year, I knew that I would buy every book in this series. Just fantastic stuff. I've got the first 4 books, and I'm very much looking forward to getting Dan's book.
Hey Rigon, please post a mini review, if you get the chance.

Well, I haven't quite settled on which one, if any, I'll get. My wife reminded me that we need to get 2 copies of Harry Potter this summer (the US and UK versions) to complete the set. So, some of that is going toward that purchase. Plus my wife is reading the Alphabet mysteries and is a couple of books behind. With summer coming, she'll have tons of free time, so I thought I'd be nice and get her caught up on those.

I'll just have to wait and see how much I spend on her, before I commit to getting for myself.
